Mileage on a reasonably new car

Was just browsing online a couple of cars with similar mileages - wondered what the perceived wisdom was on an 09 plate with 35k miles against an 07 plate with similar mileage. 35k for a 22mth old car seemed quite high (has it been totally ragged to fit in that kind of mileage in such a short time?) but then again, still a bit of manufacturers warranty left if anything falls off.
Or would something with an 07 plate (just under 4yrs) and 31k miles be a better bet though, would it be less stressed? (although no warranty). Or does it depend on the type of car?

As long as it is priced accordingly, It wouldn't put me off.
My company car is coming up to 32k at 10 months old, has been serviced and looked after properly.
Don't assume that just because it has done big miles in a short period, its thrashed, I'm sure many will agree that lots of steady motorway miles can be kinder than few town miles.

Cheers for that ultra speedy reply! Does both cars being petrol make any difference to it? 35k for a diesel at that age I thought would be OK but for a petrol engine? I'd normally make an assumption that a petrol would have had to have been utterly thrashed to keep up at motorway speeds to do the mileage (we're talking a 1.6 medium hatchback!) thus the concern. The other is a nice 2.0litre engine...
Devil's advocate - could it be an ex-hire/rental/fleet car? I don't know the specifics of selling on such cars but seeing the way some of the fleet cars at work get treated, I wouldn't be surprised if 35k of rental mileage is the same wear as 70k of normal driving. Last month I drove a fleet Peugeot 308 on a 10 plate that had 23k miles on it and it was starting to show significant wear - the synchro was f
ked and it kept jumping out of gear. Not to mention it was awfully slow and smoky - and I know how slow they're supposed to be.

My old ST focus did 125 k in around 18 months or so, no dramas as last I heard it had just rolled over 150k with nothing other than routine maintenance, still on original clutch afaik !! Properly maintained modern cars can go on to very high mileages

Cheers all, thanks for the useful comments. I suspect there would have been a whole lot more advice / abuse given if I'd mentioned the actual cars involved. Here's goes...
Kia Ceed vs Octavia VRS. Yip, totally different mindsets (no s***!) and a couple of grand between them - £7k or £9.5k - another classic case of head versus heart on this one. I know the newer Korean white goods extravaganza would be all very cheap to run & sensible for chucking piles of crap in the back & never break down but there's always been an unexplained hankering for a VRS which is practical and hoon material all in one.
Yes, it's PH forum so its the VRS everytime but trying to think on more real world terms for use everyday, limited miles etc. go for fun (the VRS is on 07 plate, no warranty possible expensive servicing / bills etc - although mpg seems frighteningly similar according to the owner forums) or the cheaper Ceed with years of warranty but free plastic driving mittens & grey tanktop.
Does the type of vehicle sway anyone? Yeah, I know what I really want is the VRS with the Kia warranty but that ain't happening...

In what way? Do you mean the Skoda is still a better bet for selling on in 3-4yrs than the Kia (that arguably would still have a little warranty?). Basically it's between looking at something safe / with warranty against a fast bit of fun without warranty (but that supposedly should be every bit as reliable and almost as cheap to run - and looking at the forums, arguably still be made of better stuff since it wears that VRS badge!)
I reckon both will cost about the same to run but is the VRS worth taking a it against something much newer (or anything else that's 09 plate against an 07 plate?). The difference in purchase price is interesting but is the older VRS worth a gamble of that couple of grand?
