2001 transit out of fuel

If a 2001 transit runs out of diesel what needs to be done.Put gallon in and does not start?

remove the return pipe from the filter to the tank ans suck out the air, either with a vaccuum or electric fuel pump.

Correction low on fuel yes, but found a some crap in filter. Cleaned out filter bled runs fine so filled up with more diesel.
