Gauging interest for a "bring what you've got" run/hoon...
Discussion
Hi all
For a while I've been wanting to go out for a drive with some fellow PHers and maybe put a few names to faces etc. However a lot of the runs organised on here tend to be high end stuff, that would leave my modest car left behind (despite the awesome driver
). If I was to organise a run out (near Leeds, probably near poole to start) for a sat/sun morning one day in the coming months for cars that are not neccesarily super cars, or super cars that fancy a slower run maybe would there be sufficent interst to make it worthwhile?
Now I've never organised anything like this before so it would take a while to plan routes etc as I don't know the roads off the top of my head. I was thinking an early start, back for lunch kind of timings wise I'd expect. I'd also be happy for someone to take the lead and organise it for me as I'm a total novice at this and it might end up as a better run (although I'll try my best).
I'd also like to say it would be a spirited but not stupid drive out. Those wishing to drive at 10/10th need not apply.
If there is no interest, then so be it but I thought there may be more people like me here...
Cheers
Chris

As a general rule of thumb Balders, get out early. We do quite a few Dawn Runs and you would be amazed how much the traffic builds up after about 9.30am on a Sunday.
If you need any suggestions regarding routes I'm happy to suggest some around East or North Yorks depending on where you are thinking of heading.
And, if it's early enough and I don't have the children, I would be up for it, either in the TR or, if more appropriate, the Z4.

With regrads to cars that people are bringing, I've got a Puma 1.7 and the whole idea of this is everyone is welcome. Even when I had my fiat I enjoyed a blast through the countryside even though the car was awful! I'd like to think burriana could turn up in his TR though and just keep pace (always nice to have some pretty cars to look at!). So the general theme is a spirited run but one where everyone will be able to keep up and enjoy themselves no matter what they're in.
With regards to timings I was thinking a most likely stary of around 6am? I think any earlier would put people off but much later and you start hitting traffic mid run.
And finally, routes I don't know many. A rough Idea was starting at the Sun Inn, looping dowtowards poole, and then back up to the A59 (?) then along there for a while, turning off towards grassington area - stopping there for a drink before heading back maybe a slightly different route. Like I said I'm not too clued up about routes but I have driven some (not all) of these roads before and enjoed them. I have no idea how long that would take, at a guess 3 hours or so. I am always open to suggestions, infact I think I'll need them!
Just to add - this would be in the not-to-distant future, but not straight away. May is very very busy for me, the car needs a bit of work done and spring's whether can be unpredicatbale and rain will half the fun! So I'm thinking maybe end of june ish if it does go ahead.

Loads of good roads up around there... but you need to get up early because at this time of year they fill up with plonkers
Starting in Poole, that'll be a long drive back up to Yorkshire

Honestly though, lots of good roads around that are not quite so out into the nether regions of North Leeds.
I've personally found working east out of Leeds has some fantastic driving roads. Possibly better for hooning too. Less chances of stray sheep, better sighted bends, and arguably lower traffic volumes even into the day time away from early morning jaunts.
I quite like running from near Garforth (up near Ginetta factory), and then run all the way out to Wheldrake on those roads. A really REALLY good run but you can start/finish in/near Leeds... maybe see if you can get onto Elvington for some photos, and then a run back on a similar route but different roads!
Not to say I'm a North East Leeds hooner only. I grew up near the Sun Inn, and at the right times of year those roads are ace. But weekends are just a joke these days. Full of bikers and/or cotton wool heads which doesn't mix well with even modestly spirited driving.
If you get up nearer Grassington there are precious few overtaking spots, so one dawdler can see you stuck for miles!

Hmm some info worth considering, thanks.
My problem with east Leeds is that I've never really been east of Leeds.
not out for a drive anyway. I live nearish the Leeds/Bradford airport so west Leeds is where I've been hooning before so if the general concenous was an east Leeds hoon I'd need to take some serious guidance on roads/routes.

The only solution is a hoon IN Leeds

I'd be easy for a run out anywhere really. I didn't realise West Leeds was that good though. Isn't that errr, Bradford?
It's a good 45min for me to get to the Sun Inn, probably 1hr 15min for someone over Burriana's way, so wherever you go people are gonna have to drive to get to the start point... just the nature of Yorkshire hoonage, big county, BUT, plenty of roads to choose from
I'm easy for a run up in the Dales, but if you are going up that way, you really need to start early as it's just so busy/popular at this time of year!

My favourite early morning hoon is to meet up at the Wetherby Butty Wagon to leave by 0630. A boring hour up the A1, A66. Then turn left at Barnard Castle down to Reeth, along to Muker, over the Buttertubs to Hawes, then Ribblehead and Settle for brunch in the Naked Man cafe.
Anyway, let me know the date/route you pick and if I'm free...

It's more like north west Leeds really where I'm on about.
If that run from whetherby is a good 'en then I'd be happy to follow that, it sounds like you've done this before and so probably know the roads better than me! Even though nothing is certain yet and it might be a number of weeks till the run actually takes place it might be a good idea to get a rough route done on paper so people will have a better idea if they can attend or not? Sound like a good idea?
The roads I suggested have been mentioned to be quite busy, so if everyone thinks it's a good route we could use PaulHogan's run as a guide to start place and route for now? If I was to lead this though I'd need to research the roads a little bit! Plenty of time though so no worries. If you can Paul, can you give a better idea of the actual roads taken (if you know).
Cheers
