Nikon D100 - user advice required please

I hope some of you more experienced Nikon users are able to help with this one?
My father has a Nikon D100, which he purchased new as an outgoing model (replaced with D200?), but the pictures have always been slightly disapointing, taking an identical photo on my Canon 350D or 20D with the 17-50 kit lens always produces a better result; the Nikon photos are always slightly darker, and can have more of a blue tint (colout temp?). The only thing i can put it down to is the lenses, which were not purchased for the camera, but instead he is using the lens for his F301 film SLR, i believe they are both Nikon lenses, 17-70 and 700-210 i think, but donlt have any more details at present.
Sorry i haven't got any sample pic's to post at the moment, but i hope someone can point me in the right direction.

really need to know about settings.
What white balance is set? Can you set custom wb on that model?
I'd be very surprised at a blue tint due to a lens - yellow or magenta perhaps (coatings deteriorating with age)
Can you get a pic through one of his lenses onto white paper - just the lens - does that show a cast?
Has he got any filter installed ? even supposed clear/uv?

Could be a metering issue, or difference between the D100 and the Canon. Spot vs Matrix for example. Could also be using a preset shooting mode with compensation, flash especially? Might be worth trying a custom WB and metering off a light meter, then seeing what happens when you dial those settings in to each camera
How are you judging the exposure? If it's just by looking at the LCD monitor (bad idea), maybe this is not bright enough and needs turning up (a menu setting). Better still, find what the exposure really is by finding and using the histogram display.
Other than that if the photos are consistently coming out a little underexposed, use +EV to correct. I typically run at +0.5EV.
Worth noting that DSLRs (in my experience at least) hate highlights and crank the exposure down to try to not to clip. Then you have to decide if the highlight detail is wanted or can be lost.
