Why do lorries have amber lights down the sides? You overtake one and then st yourself halfway up when one of these little sts catches the corner of your eye

They are marker lights.

You'd get more of a fright if you ran into the side of one at night without them.

Yep, legal requirement to stop stupid car drivers messing up our paintwork.

Actually, I have seen at least one lorry that clearly had these wired up to the indicators.

Not sure if this is a good idea or not.

Exactly. In terms of visibility, there's no doubting his intentions. I'm just not sure of the legalities of having flashing marker lights.

Most fuel tankers have at least one combination marker/indicator lamp along the side (trailer). In addition the side marker lamps also have reflectors built into the lenses. They aint optional. Anything that increases visibility has to be good surely.

We've just started trialling them on new 'tear-drop' trailers which are on order. Looked quite odd as I saw one coming across the yard with the hazards showing - very striking though.

The 'we' is DHL by the way so I have no doubt it's legal to do.

It's not that the lights are there I understand their use what annoys is the fact that they are amber. It would be better if they were a different colour.

EFA. Yeah disco lights! That'll soften the image of truck drivers!

Maybe he looked at them while blinking and thought it was the light flashing.
