I need help PH - This isn't a whatcar though, promise
Discussion
Well, it kinda is..
I've been looking for the past few months at what car I want next, and I've decided upon a few reasons that a Clio Sport makes sense.
That taken into account I've been on the hunt for one for the past month or so. This weekend I finally found 2 good examples. Which leads us on to the problem of which one do I buy?
Both cars are private, and owned by seeming enthusiasts. I'll explain the cars in paragraphs
Car 1: Renault Sport Clio 172 Phase1
Year of manufacture:2001
Condition:9/10 only 2 or 3 small dents, no scratches
Mileage:90000
Tax/Test: plenty, can't confirm but it was a lot
Price:1700
Comments:Drives brilliant, feels faster than the 182. Owner is an enthusiast BUT has just upgraded to a 182 himself?
Car 2: Renault Sport Clio 182
Year of manufacture: 2004
Condition: 7/10 - alloys need a refurb and there are a few stone chips/parking dints
Mileage:68000
Tax/Test:6mths tax, 1month test (possibly 12mth)
Price:£3000
Comments: Drives spot on, I love the cruise control - car feels great but the budget tyres are noisy and say a lot about the owner in my opinion. Car has had 5 previous owners in 7 years and it has no proof of the cambelt being done which is obviously an expensive job. The previous owner to the current said he had it done but has no proof as it was a cash job done by a friend in 2009.
I know at the end of the day it is my decision, but some mature advice is always welcome.
To sum up in a sentence, the 172 felt better, but doesn't look as nice. The 182 has all the creature comforts such as xenons/climate/cruise.

I can remember reading about the very first 172s all those years ago in Evo, it was one of those cars that I always wanted but never got around to owning.
There's probably not that many nice ones left nowadays, so if you have found a decent one (and it sounds like you may have) it's probably worth snapping up.

Ditto, although when I finally spent some time behind the wheel of one, I found it a nasty, skittish, unreliable, overrated heap of crap. I am well aware I am in a minority with this opinion before the fanboys start ranting. Perhaps it was a bad one?
I'm with The Crack Fox on this one. Perhaps the 172 Cup I drove was a bad one, but it really didn't do anything for me at all. The interior was nasty, the clutch pedal feel was horrendous as with all Clios, and the gearbox is almost as bad. The engine was fairly strong, mind. Not the epitome of refinement but flexible and enthusiastic.
The climate control will poison you, the xenons will turn you into a human fireball (i seem to remember a thread on here with a copper coloured 172/182 that spontaneously combusted as a result) and the cruise control will no doubt try and kill you too.
Go for the 172 and avoid all the horrible electrics.

Won't you just get bored of either of these after about half an hour, like you have with all your other fwd hatches.I've been looking for the past few months at what car I want next, and I've decided upon a few reasons that a Clio Sport makes sense.

As said in some of your what car threads. If you buy a fairly mundane, normal and somewhat dull car (even a good variant such as these) - ie a regular shopping hatchback. Then expect them not to hold your interest.
You've already successfully proven to yourself that such cars do not hold long term interests for you.
