Wasn't your car supplied with a very short extension lead for the usb port? If you haven't got it, check with your dealer, shouldn't be that dear and would solve the problem?
No, they didn't supply a lead. I didn't even know you could get such a thing, it would have been a good solution. I managed to source a stubby USB from Amazon.
I have a 16gb small one made by kingston, can't find it on the web now so not sure if it is discontinued but will check the model later if you want? After a proper format it works fine.
