...and in my ignorance I don't even know if it would be the 'right one'

We've got an EOS1000d (with an 18-135) which is used for the family camera. I'd like to increase capability and am looking at 75-300 lenses.

I found this and I was wondering if it's good value (and appears to be the right version for my camera)? If not, what else may be better for the same/similar price??

It will fit and is cheap however I would look at spending more on a better quality lens to be honest. Although that depends on what your budget is and how serious you are about your photorgaphy.

Thanks - not serious about photography (although my wife has mentioned evening classes/club) we just use it for family stuff, birthdays, holidays etc.

What would be better (if anything?) at £150ish? and if not what's the next real price/function level?

I'd go for the 55-250 for that kind of budget, can be picked up from £125 or so new, great little lens, even has IS which makes using the long end really easy.

This.

The EF-S 55-250 is a much better lens than the 75-300 in all aspects except build quality.

Is there much difference between the 250 and 300 at full zoom? We're thinking about a safari and don't want to be squinting at a dot on a picture trying to remember if it was a lion or an anthill

Yes that's the one.

300mm is obvilously better than 250mm - but shooting from a Land Rover bouncing around on an unmade road, I'd take 4 stops of Image Stabilisation over an extra 50mm anyday.

Get a lens hood to go with it too to prevent flare if you're going to be shooting in bright light. The Canon ones are (too) expensive but you'll be able to get a Chinese copy from Ebay for less than a fiver that'll do the job just as well.
