Hi Guys

Back in November I purchased a non-running 1991 Mk2 Golf GTI 16v in Oak Green. It was dark and raining when MDT and I went to see it, and we couldn't see the interior as the guy didn't have the keys. But we just knew.

So, we went to pick it up from Carnoustie and trailered it back to Edinburgh, which was easier said than done as the brakes were seized on!

I was rewarded with a massive history file including the original bill of sale, though. £15k in 1991.

So, then the work began in earnest (mainly by MDT - cheers Matt!). The car was very solid, and very original, bar a debadged grille which we soon replaced.

MDT spent loads of time changing all the brakes, including pipes, calipers, discs and pads, the wheel bearings and various suspension bits and bobs.

The non-running was diagnosed as being a faulty hall sensor. Once replaced the car ran as sweet as a button.

Cosmetically, I got a set of refurbished BBS RA wheels, a set of as new Rainbow seats as the ones in the car were slightly worn and various other bits of trim.

The intention is to have the car as it left the factory. I have spent a lot of time sourcing some choice bits, like an original first aid kit, warning triangle and Fischer cassette holder smile

I even got the original supplying dealer to make up the number plates and give me a tax disc holder. Sad, but I think it is cool.

But the best news is IT PASSED ITS MOT YESTERDAY, just in time for its 20th birthday today.

I am very chuffed, and it is so much fun to drive. Nimble, sounds great and it has a great ride. It is also fun being around so much iconic equipment, like the BBS wheels, the bee-sting aerial, the rainbow seats, the front grille etc etc

Here is a pic as it is now. It is going in to the paintshop for some minor paint next week, and I will post some further pics then.

Mk2 GTI 16vs are so much fun. I wholeheartedly recommend them!

Lovely car!

I just bought myself a mk2 golf 8v in oak green, loving it so far. came with 12 months mot and is a solid and honest car. Mine isnt quite as original though...... lowered on kw coilovers (not silly low) and smoked indicators.

Good to see another one saved!! It is annoying that mk2s are very much getting to a similar stage of mk1s with there being no where near enough that havent been messed about with. Have you joined the mk2 golf owners club ?

It is because getting new speedo cables can be tricky.

I do love these threads as it proves that for the large number of people who have clearly become blinded by all the anti VAG comments in General Gassing that those who actually own/have owned a proper golf GTI still have a large amount of respect for what the cars are capable of.

I'm guessing that was sarcastic?

OP, great work on the car. I am in the final stage of building my MK2 GTI. It's also a five door but in alpine white, I have kept it looking standard and original but have re-worked and upgraded all the parts on it and am fitting a 2.0 16v from a MK3.

Can't beat an original looking MK2 GTI in my opinion!

Looked in the classifieds yesterday & there are some mental modded GTi's for sale, typical example here:

http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1803883.htm

I used to own a big bumper 16v mk2 back in the mid 90's, loved it!

No i was bein quite serious, getting a speedo cable for a 16v isn't easy. I've tried VW,GSF & Euro car parts.

The ABF swap is a nice conversion, it can be quite straight forward by using the ABF engine running on Kjet or you can go the whole 9 yards an ave mk3 ECU + ignition system + ODB which certainly has it's benefits on mildly tuned cars like better fuel economy, easier diagnostics an the ECU can be mapped for modifications. I'm a Kjet fan myself so ran a 9A/KR hybrid which was circa 170hp but now run a high compression 1.8 build.
