my girlfriend kindly got me one of these last christmas

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Held-ToGo-Waterproof-Black-B...

and its fantastic! built in water proof cover, will take a 'camelback' bladder, its just big enough for a set of tools/spares and a change of clothes and towel. Its also very comfy and not too sweaty to boot!

How much stuff do you need to carry?

After my first trip in proper rain and everything getting soaked I bought one of these:

Gourdon 20 Click

It's not the comfiest bag in the world but it's fine for 1/2 an hour each way and is very good at keeping everything dry. Will just about take a small kit of tools, a big lock and a set of office clothes - including shoes - plus various other odds and ends.

Though tbh I now keep shoes under the desk and the kit I need through the week gets brought in in stages each day, sorry, that's a whole other topic in itself.

Anyway. Would recommend the Gourdon.

I've always used Camelbaks, very good quality IME.

The Deuter stuff is excellent too, just got a small one and it's excellent too.

Basically any 'proper' articulated rucksack should do the job well! If you're cycling into work however, it might be worth looking into panniers to avoid the 'backpack-sweat-patch'!

I've just got a Deuter Race Air which is excellent quality, takes a 3l bladder and has a mesh section which holds the rucksack itself off your back, thus stopping sweaty back syndrome, which is handy because I sweat like... [insert your own gag here]!

Been using a previous version of this daily for the last three years for 5 miles each way commuting (other sizes available) and for walking trips too.

Comfy, roomy, plenty of pockets, space for a camelback if that's your thing, fairly waterproof - rain cover in a pouch underneath, and some reflective bits on it as well. I'll happily have another when this one dies.

I absolutely love my Oakley Toolbox 4.0. I was worried that it was a little big for my commute, but it turns out it's just about right and so, so comfortable. Has the advantage of taking a camelbak bladder, has a harness thing to store your helmet, perfectly sized side pockets to fit bidons etc, but the best part for me is that in addition to the opening flap at the top, there is also a full length zip that runs down the side so you can get stuff out easily wherever in the bag it is.

Got mine on offer for about £45.

I use a Camelback mule, used it for about 5 years and no sign of wear. Brilliant pack.

I do want one of these though, so tell Mrs. Gooby I want a birthday treat!

I use the previous version of the slightly bigger model of this: http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/ebwPNLqrymode.a4p?... As said above, comfy, roomy, has reflective bits, although I always have the luminous yellow raincover over mine for visibility. Made by Vaude for Edinburgh Bicycle so quality is superb. I also use a smaller version for MTBing and it's held up very well for 4 years and counting.
