I have a BMW 323i in E36 flavour, which i understand generate a fair bit of underbonnet heat. I've found a cone filter in my garage which i quite fancy fitting, not bothered about performance as it's a slow car anyway, just want to unleash some more noise. So, as the title says, can heatsoak actually damage the engine or will it just be slightly down on power? Cheers, Ollie

why bother, you may upset the fuel mixture,if you want more noise drill some holes in your silencer.in fact as you mention underbonnet temp is high fitting a cone filter may actually reduce power as it could draw in this hot air(which again will upset the mixture) unless shrouded to recieve cold ambient air.

hot air may cause detonation but on an otherwise bog standard engine it shouldn't cause any lasting effect.
