Having problems finding suitable tyres for my Impreza.

On the proper 16" wheels and at 205/50/16 the choice is slim with most available being comfort or fuel saving types of tyre.

I can get Bridgestone RE050 it would seem but only in V rating. That itself doesn't bother me but I am worried about the insurance aspect.
Anyone know of good tyres that are available in this size?

Other options are:

Toyo T1R - the design is about 7 yrs old now though.
Nokian V or G2 - These seem to get decent reviews
ContiSport Contact2 - Seem to be available but, I think out of production for a year so may have been lying around a while?

Assuming that you do want to stick with the standard wheels and tyre size I would say go with the Toyo's, if I had that list. Simply on a cost/value angle.

Rest assured you will get someone on here talking about reduced grip in wet weather grip from one make or another, but unless you are not intending to slow down a bit when its raining hard, I can't see a problem.

Bridgestone RE050 should be a lot better than the T1R from what I've heard, but not used them myself. I use Bridgestone RE001 on the GTB (215/45R17, a bit more weight and power than the Impreza), having had T1Rs (and GSD3s) before I wouldn't go back.

Grip was fine, it was the soft/weak sidewalls that were the issue with the T1Rs - felt horrible, were very pressure sensitive and chewed the sidewalls out pretty quickly in hard driving as well as being extremely vulnerable to punctures.

I had T1-Rs on my Saxo VTS and they were great, suited the car very well.
There is an extra 350kg on the Impreza though and it does make me think about the sidewall issue.

I swapped the car from 18s to the original wheels in the week that I bought it. Seriously considering 17s now due to the tyre scenario.

Any issues with the RE50s being V rated? The car is supposed to be on W but I can't see it ever braking 149mph.

First, that size rim will legally accept a range of tyre widths - it'll be like 205 to 215. The tyre normally states what rim size it will work with. For example, I have 7.5s on my Evo and they will accept 215-235 tyres.

Second, most tyres have a load rating so you just need to select the correct load. Most makes of tyre will come in the same design and size but several load ratings (as well as XL ratings on some, which indicates reinforced side-walls. Great for corners but a harsher ride).

Third, buy whatever seems to work based on the scooby forums.

That said, I've just fitted these to my Evo for summer and they are brilliant tyres and very cheap (comparatively speaking). They even work ok in the wet.

Kumho KU36.

ETA Forgot to add, only fit 17s IF you can find a tyre + wheel combo that is at least the same weight or lighter than the ones you are replacing otherwise handling will be negatively affected. The damping on your car is designed to work with a specific wheel / tyre mass. Increasing that gives the dampers a harder work out and means the tyre spends less time in contact with the road when it's bumpy.

Might be too expensive and soft, but you can get Yokohama AD08s in that size.

i no these are not on the list but Falken FK452 are good and they come in the size you want at around £70 each,

they don’t have quite as much grip in the dry as the toyo (not far off) but thay are loads better across the board (wet to mostly dry) and they give you a nice feel when you a pushing hard. i have a pair fitted on the back of my impreza and they have performed very well, they also last quite well to

I bought a new set of T1R`s for mine and I like them. Although they do feel spongier than the Kumho KU31`s that were on it before they feel much grippier.

Sometimes its cheaper to buy a set of alloys off ebay or similar which are already wearing good tyres, then you have 2 sets of wheels which may come in useful or you could sell the 16`s, but i personally would only want wheels which originally came from Subaru unless they were a quality branded lightweight wheel and i was certain they were the correct offset.

Just as an update I eventually got a good deal on Uniroyal RainSport2s.

Will update once I get a feel for them.

The reason t1r,s are 7yeara old is because they are bloody good tyres, dont fix it if it aint broke scenario, i have them on my classic and cant fault them, any tyre will be worse in the wet than the dry pretty much, the other one that is getting rave reviews at the moment is the vredestein ultra sessanta not sure if they come in the right size for you, but also very well reccommended.
