Best way to get rid of Ants !!

As per title,what is the best/most eco-friendly method of removing a couple of new ant colonies that have just appeared on the paving...right outside the front door !

Thought that maybe a strong salt solution may deter them ?

We used to use a kettle full of boiling water in the old days. In the even older days I used a lens out of some WWII binoculars and the sun - the heat would stop them dead but they took a second to pop - slow work one at a time though.

I found a line of ants marching diagionally across the paviers in the drive. I zapped them with Tugon and they disappeared. For a bit - a few days later I found them marching in a new line a foot away from the old one and parallel to it. Not stupid, ants.

We've got them in the house and i've read you can get ant bait that they carry back to their nest and it poisons the entire colony.

Yup. Nippon is great stuff. They yum it up, take it back to the nest, feed it to the Queen and everyone, then they all drop dead. Result!

I used an ant killer powder from B&Q last week and it worked a treat. Wasn't the cheapest one - was about 4.99 and was granular rather than a powder. The insructions tell you to spread the powder in corners and across walls and also try and find the nest and put powder on that too.

Powder worked a treat again this year its the third year and the same powder it must never go off spread it on the nest along walls external and internal everywhere they might get inside they were gone within a day or two never to be seen again... until next year no doubt.

Bendiocarb-based powder, works on ants and wasps well. It's cheap so you can spray all along the line and plenty around where you think the nest is. As mentioned as long as enough powder is taken back into the nest it will kill the lot.

The best stuff I've found is a lacquer spray called Deathlac. In my experience it works better than anything else, and keeps working long after powders etc have been washed away so prevents re-infestation.

Is that the little flat tin about the size of a shoe polish tin that you pierce open and put on the floor?

If so, this +1. Works a treat. They lap it up, take it back to the nest and it kills them all.
