A mate of mine is shopping for a TV, and he's not really sure where to begin. He's looking for 40" plus, the more features the better, and reliability is important. He's a bit of a Sony Fanboy but I think he can be persuaded elsewhere. At the moment his basis for shopping is "that one looks nice," and I don't think he's overly bothered about doing his research - if it looks pretty and has a Sony badge on he'll be happy. I'm trying to show the benefits of doing some digging first.

What's the consensus on the best TV in this price range?

  • Just to clarify, £700 is the upper limit for the all singing all dancing contender. Anything from £500 will be considered**

I'm not even going to look at the link I just know it will be a Panasonic. From the recommendations on here I don't know why other manufacturers even bother making TVs. As you may have guessed, I don't have a Panasonic.

Care to make a non-Panasonic recommendation? Personally I have one (from recommendations on here - a 42G10) and love it, but I'm open to suggestions.

Reading the reviews, it doesn't have the 3D part built in does it? Don't you have to shell out extra? Or is that the same for all 3D TV's? 3D is voodoo to me.

fair point. you do require the 3D receiver in addition, however the part is circa £50 and the glasses are £99 but sometimes they include it in the price.

It is all well and good however not many people have many 3D data sources to fully utilise this..

You might just find this for £750 now: http://www.trustedreviews.com/Sony-Bravia-KDL-40NX...

Got one, love it. Looks as good off as on.

Get a £700 telly and still pocket the £300 difference.

Just ordered one of these.

If you've got an old telly you'll get £100.

Sony KDL40EX503 40 inch £500, but £400 with £100 cash off

To be honest I cannot remember the model number, i`ve had it for the best of 5 years and i`ve bought cars for less than it cost.
