as the title really.just looking for a little impartail advice as to fuel burn-i know if you have to ask blah blah.i have had a small block v8 before but never a boat this big or engine this big.its a yank deep v single engine 650hp non blower motor 28 feet about 2500kg's.its plenty of engine for the boat so hoping that pegged back to a sensible cruise it wont be too bad.just dont know if i will be able to resist 80mph but probably the same no. of gallons per hour!!!

I used to run a Fairline 47 out of Shamrock Quay on the Itchen, There was a guy next to us who ran about a thirty footer on two huge petrols (can't remember the boats name...).
Rather than fuel on the docks, where petrol's expensive, he used to bring fuel in jerry cans, trolley full after trolley full... It was worth every penny when he started them up though :-)

haven't pushed the button and bought the boat yet but really fancy doing the grumbly shunty bb v8 before petrol is the preserve of only the elite!can imagine your boat shook when he started that beast up-probably sounded like a chapter of hells angels on the dock.

On my old formula 292 I used to do exactly that. 100l of jerry cans and a couple of shuttle runs to the fuel station.

Is it on a trailer? A 28' single engine boat should be under the towing limit, so just tow a short distance to the petrol station?

And I gotta ask - what is it?

yes on trailer-twin axle with std surge brakes, its a velocity 280 which acctually i beleive is a 26 foot hull +2 for the swim platform.yep i would cause absolute chaos towing it thru asdalaughmy tow vehicle limit is 2800kgs so it will pull it but dont imagine i am going to be the right side of the bib-having said that they don't seem particularly well informed.i have many a towing tale over the years!how was your fuel burn?

I run (ran) a Revenger San Marino (27') with a 502mpi and the truth is it will depend how heavy you are with the right foot.

I've had figures ranging from 10 - 20 GPH right through to 35. The thing to remember is unless you are racing you are not going to sit with your foot planted fully home for an hour so it becomes a pretty useless measure. Another thing to remember is that if you do that foot planted for an hour bit you end up a long way from where you started. biggrin

The best measure I ever had was a run from Poole down to Bucklers hard alongside a Phantom 18 with 200 in a heavy sea but carrying good speeds and we did a petrol fill showing the same to the litre.

In terms of use though a 200 litre tank can last me anything from a couple of hours (Crouch to Norfolk Broads) to a couple of weeks (general sodding about on the river)

Post some pics up though.

thanks motorvator, useful info there.agree when you look at how you really use your boat,i rarely nailed the lever fully home for more than a few miles.think i might go for it if it all checks out.anyone know the towing limit?cheers.

Towing Limit? Worms can interface comes to mind. Never met a copper that undertands it let alone a simple boating man.

Depends when you passed your test as to what you can tow. Trailed weight is actually dictated by the towing vehice capacity and Gross train weight.

Hot tip is to use a classic RR and get a greater capacity than you do with new ones.

Once you have the weight dealt with you need to think about size and you will have to play clever if you haven't got a 3 1/2t GW vehicle to tow with.

Max width 2.55m but more importantly max length 7m (12m if you have a heavy tow vehicle). That though doesn't include the drawbar so if you look at your trailer, if the builder was any good, he will have bent the rules by taking the drawbar right back through the 'A' frame and onto a cross member hence keeping the length within limit and letting the load overhang it.

Total length of trailer and vehicle though is 18m and I have been caught out by a particularly offensive wpc. Her take on it was that the trailer board supports constituted part of the trailer even though they aren't structural.

She was most pleased when I put the supports away, hung the board from the transom and stuck an orange bag over the now exposed leg and gave me a cheery wave as we carried on our way. ( Parts of the foregoing maybe embellished to protect any sexual fantasies created by women in uniform. smile )

I have also had a run in with a particularly daft officer who decided the trailer should be fitted with a secondary coupling device despite me attempting to explain that the breakaway emrgency brake cable would be ineffective if the trailer was permantely attached by a chain. That one resulted in a letter from his superior confirming that chains were to be used on under 750kg or unbraked but that the law was unclear, so a semi apology.

You or the car?

The point of the rest was that even though sometimes BIB won't believe you the trailer was probably built in accordance with the construction and use regs and will be legal to tow even if it is stretching the intent of the legislation.

The Revenger sits on a 4 wheel trailer and is 100% legal as long as I use the Classic RR but as daft as it is maybe a bit suspect if I put it behind the new RR.

Ah the old American trailer problem. So apart from the size, hitch arrangement, type of brakes and lighting it should be legal. smile
