Land Rover Discovery 98-04 (Series 2?) - Good / Bad idea?

For a 'reliable' load lugger, twin and wife transporter, fun car for me, and maybe the odd bit of off-roading?
Do they have to be expensive to run? Looking at the TDV5, more worried about parts / servicing costs. What should I look out for? I have little knowledge of Landies.
Will need to lose the MX5 and fancy something different - don't think you can get much different!
Looking to spend around £6-7k.
Cheers!

Brilliant car....as long as you get a good one!
Sold my TD5 ES last year and upgraded to a RRS but miss the general simplicity. Buy one with some provenance and a decent spec like a GS or ES, Auto was nice for me and 7 seaters make more money than 5's. Some items are expensive like the rear suspension on ACE equipped cars, electrical gremlins are common and the cost of a spare key will make you cry!
Get a good one (and I was lucky), you'll love it. Loads of detailed info out there on the specialist Discovery2 sites. My dark Blue ES with all the toys, 51 plate and 125,000 miles sold instantly for £6500. Rubbish one are half that but it's a real two level market with prices very strong for decent cars, especially the facelift version.

Rover 75 keys work on the D2. You can re-code 2nd hand ones as well as the original D2 keys with a Nanocom diagnostics tool that an independant LR place may well have. If you go to a LR forum a local member could likley help you out. A key blade can be bought on Ebay for about a tenner.
