buying a van with 200k miles on the clock?

Private dealer. Claims he doesnt know what its been used for...
No service history.
But... It's pretty clean and hes willing to stick and MOT ticket on it...
Im quite tempted. Drive it, seemed OK. The radio doesnt work, but its a smooth drive and seems cheap at that money. Sod it, im looking at starting my own business and want something semi decent looking that I can put signage on that wont cost me the world.

Check who the previous registered keeper is, might give a clue to it's history.
Lead to believe those 1.5 engines are reliable if they're maintained well (it's a Renault lump, but one of the more reliable ones)
Like I said. I know very little about mechanics. Infact i'd never driven a diesel before... But it will be cheap insurance, cheap fuel and will do the job. Just not sure if the engines can do 200k.Lead to believe those 1.5 engines are reliable if they're maintained well (it's a Renault lump, but one of the more reliable ones)
What else is in your price range? I'd buy this just to dick around with but if it's something that you need to rely on to work and make money I'd want something with a proven service history etc.
You've made me remember I want a van

1.5, might that be a Pug or some other gallic type, if so maybe non-turbo, will be a better bet than a turbo'd version, if so, quite capable of galactic mileage.
99.9% sure it'll be a Renault 1.5 dCi turbo diesel as fitted to Clio, Megane, Scenic as well as Kangoo, etc.Kiltox said:

It is. I looked it up.And it does seem perfect. Asked the bloke if he's take and offer and he told me that if he stuck on an mot he wouldnt change it by a penny. Might call him and offer £1300 tomorrow, I think I'll take it if he will accept 1400...
On the otherhand, have you looked up van insurance... It's silly expensive.

This is why I don't have a van instead of a car
Well, I want to work as a gardener. Kind of tough to fit all the gear in a 206...
Admittedly I could get a bigger car. But I think a van looks more pro, and also I won't really care if I mess it up a bit by throwing stuff in it at the moment. 2k for the 3rd part t/f will hurt alot though!
OK, quick search and it's a turbo diesel, so at 200k, it's should have had alot replaced, if not, you are going to be the (un)lucky person potentially lumped with the bills. Turbo/fuel pumps/clutch, and alot more, that's a big mileage on a turbo diesel, if nothing's been done.

As it seems like a lot of people here know a lot more than me... I'm gonne ask some questions:
1) it drives well, however the windscreen wipers seemed to come on and off and the radio won't work at all... is this something to be worried about.
2) does it seem like a decent price?
3) what should i check or look out for in particular if I have another look tomorrow morning?
The bloke (dealer) seemed reasonable. However he is a dealer... and when I got there his "mate" was just there, who told me with him what an amazing drive it was. I really don't want to get my pants pulled over my head. However I do want something which if it gets scratched im not going to cry, but equally something which will run with minimal or any work. Does this fit the bill?

Electrical problems in what is essentially a Renault - yes, worry. In fact, run unless it's a common problem that's easy to fix. Also, I was kind of s
tting myself about not having a rearview mirror. I'm a little scared about not being able to check blind spots on the motorway... is this normal?
Also I'm going to make you all laugh... my top two comments:
1) whats happened to the rearview mirror? err... its a van it doesnt have one.
2) when i tried to start it it stalled... err its a diesel you need to wait til the lights go out and the glowplugs are warmed...
I felt pretty small, I have to be honest.

You get used to the lack of a rear view very quickly - it took me about 2 miles the first time I drove a rental Vauxhall Combo

What took me a bit longer was actually looking to my right when changing lanes and seeing the bulkhead instead of out of a side window

Glowplug thing..... it shouldn't take long for the light to go out unless it's a) very cold or b) the glowplugs are fecked.
Kiltox said:
Yeah thinking about it the diesel I tried to start before the glow plug light went out in the cold didn't stall, it just didn't start!
Umm not sure it stalled... The bloke just said that I should give it some revs.... Or wait for the light to go out. Ah... I hate this... I really wish I had someone I could ask. Got mates with diesels... but none with vans... Not sure a navara is the same as a small van...
I was told by my uncle (hgv driver) that diesels would do this though...
ALSO... just remembered. It didnt stall on starting the engine. Just when I tried to move it after turning the engine on immidiately like I would in my car.
