Ok, so "Soaring, uplifting, atmospheric indie/rock" is possibly not a brilliant way to describe it, but hopefully you'll know the type of thing I mean. The kind of stuff that can just sends a shiver up your spine the way it rises, falls, builds layers, creates that "feeling" etc.

Stuff a bit like this:

The Naional - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Hl6GnmvMMA

White Lies - Bigger Than Us: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JW0yynlDmqQ

Band Of Horses - The Funeral http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMFWFhTFohk

I could do with finding a few more examples but I'm already running a bit late as it is.

So basically, does anyone else like that type of thing? Which other bands or songs would fit in that (admittedly very loose) category?

As many examples/links as you've got please!

I was going to go for White Lies too. Some of the more beat-driven Bloc Party stuff is a bit the same in that respect. Going a bit further back, The Bravery and Arcade Fire were quite good at that in the (recent) past. MGMT have their moments too.

If you can stand the proclaimers like jock accents, then The Twilight Sad are the sort of thing you're after. Listen to Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters.

We have very similar tastes in music. These ^^^ are one of my favourite bands.

Also worth a look - Wild Beasts, Noah and the Whale (last two albums, although First Day of Spring is almost heartbreaking), Interpol (not the most recent one, but go older), Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Death Cab for Cutie and Broken Social Scene.

Bloc Party is a good shout actually. I ought to dip into some of their back catalogue a bit more, I do really like some of their stuff. I've got Silent Alarm and I've seen them at Glastonbury (a couple of times, I think) and enjoyed it. I almost included Arcade Fire's Neighbourhood #3 (Power Out) as an example in my OP, they're definitely up there on my list - the album Funeral in particular. They're a real live favourite of mine.

And I really liked The Bravery's debut at the time too, although I've somewhat gone off it a bit since. And as you say, there are some good MGMT tracks that fit the bill. A few of Editors' songs fit too, the first time I saw them at Glasto off the back of The Back Room, I thought they were brilliant.

There must be loads more groups/acts out there that do this type of thing well, I bet there's a lot of non-mainstream stuff or "fringe" bands that I'd like who I don't yet know of.

More suggestions very much welcome smile

Cheers for the suggestions, alfa pint.

The Twighlight Sad I heard of recently actually, although I can't remember where or when. I'll have a look into them for sure. Wild Beasts are a completely new one to me, so I'll definitely give them a whirl.

The rest of them I know of, although I'm familiar with them to varying degrees. The odd Noah And The Whale track I've quite liked, so I'll check them out at greater length. I have some Interpol downloaded from iTunes that I've yet to really get into (often grouped together with Editors, whose stuff I quite like), but off the back of your post I'll try them properly.

Death Cab for Cutie and Broken Social Scene I didn't really think was this type of music to be honest, but I'll get on YouTube later and have a good listen. And Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are definitely one to check out, someone posted one of theirs on here fairly recently and I enjoyed it.

Some good stuff for me to be looking into here, but keep them coming!

Good call. Also, check out the Engineers. This album is absolutely fantastic. The next one is pretty good too.

Avoid their latest effort, though. Not so hot.

I'll post up some specific songs when I'm back home and can squiz at the iPod.

For Twilight Sad, try 'I Became A Prostitute' for starters, and then anything off the 14 Autumns, 15 Winters album.

For Edward Sharpe + Magnetic Zeros, try 'Desert Song', 'Jade', 'Home'

Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights is the best album, but the most accessible is Our Love to Admire. Try 'Mammoth', 'Rest My Chemistry', 'The Lighthouse' and 'Pioneer to the Falls'

Nothing wrong with going back to some golden oldie stuff as well - Pixies' Doolittle is a classic and up your street, and there's always some Simple Minds - New Gold Dream is still a brilliant album, as is Street Fighting Years. You might even like some old Marillion stuff - check out 'Script for a Jester's Tear', Tux On, 100 Nights (slightly newer track), Easter (another newer ish one). The early 80s U2 albums are also fantastic and don't age at all.

Death Cab for Cutie - no particular tracks, but Someday You will Be Loved is a good intro to them.

If you like Arcade Fire, you'll like Broken Social Scene - Texico bhes will stick in your head for ages.

If you're feeling brave, try Eels. 'Next Stop: My Town' is just brilliant. 'That's not really funny' you'll recognise. 'Souljacker pt 1' is epic. The whole of the 'electro-shock blues' album is a must have imho.

Well shocked to see Birdpen on the list.
Saw them at the Joiners in Southampton a few years back and thought they were awesome.
Bought the album on the back of that gig.
Also agree with Glasvegas and Interpol.
How about The Raveonettes and TV on the Radio.

Only recently got into Birdpen - Dave Pen is also one of the lead singers for Archive, and being a massive fan of them thought I'd give it a go. The On/Off/Safety/Danger album is great.

Try Idlewild's '100 Broken Windows' or 'The Remote Part' albums.
