Aren't studded tyres illegal for road use in the UK anyway?

You can use fog lights in broad daylight so ice tyres in Summer should be fine. hehe

"Winter tyres" DOES NOT MEAN "studded/spiked tyres".

I've driven a car with a spiked tyre on a dry road.

After about 20 miles on a motorway it exploded at high speed, with a massive bang and a force that took a good chunk of the wheel arch with it.

I wouldn't recommend it.

You're not supposed to exceed 90kph on a studded tyre on a dry road. Which may explain what happened.

Was in St.Tropez last summer and a number of cars were still on winter tyres. Don't believe it has any detrimental effect apart from wearing them out a little quicker. Would undoubtedly be better on greasy wet roads I'd expect.

Though that's largely because you live within the arctic circle! biggrin

I once turned a set of full winters on a Chrysler Voyager we were using in Austria into jelly by running them at 100mph in 30 degrees C along the A8 in the South of France seven up for two hours. You could move the tread blocks around by hand! eek

I still have my winter tyres (non-stud) on the car at the moment. Just waiting for the Toyo T1Rs to arrive. Need to find somewhere that I can finish the winters off when I get the others, as I'm not using them again next year.

so what you ment to say was i wouldn't recomend driving faster than the safe limit of what ever tyres you have on the car, slash, do some research before risking everyone elses lives and then blaming the tyres ?

I wouldn't go that far - unless you got some of the questionable chinese import tyres that are so popular in the UK.

For those that enjoy driving hard, cold weather tyres certainly start to diminish once you're in double figures. I changed mine over in early February as I noticed they were struggling under braking.
Having said that, if you're happy to just tootle about, you can leave them on all year round.

Is that a spiked tyre? I don't think so.

Looks like a winter tyre alright, but with a few bits of gravel stuck in the treads..
