I've booked a test drive in a 2006 130i M Sport (an AUC) this Saturday and as someone who has never bought from the trade, never mind a main dealer I would appreciate some advice on value and negitiation on the deal. The car is up at £11,950, and the spec is:

- Le Mans Blue Metallic Paint
- Bluetooth prep
- Professional Radio
- ISOFIX front seat
- Black boston leather
- PDC front & rear
- Heated front seats
- Xenons

Pretty much perfect aside from no sunroof and maybe HiFi but the highest spec AUC 130s on sale.

I have no trade-in and will probably be buying with some finance. The dealer recently advertised the car with either a 2-year warranty or £1000 contribution but this officially ended at the end of April. Where should I start from without looking like I'm taking the proverbial, given I'm using their finance, have no trade-in and the car is a 3 litre petrol hatchback in today's market? Is a bid of £10k too cheeky to start?

How many miles has is done?

Is it a facelift car?

10k doesn't seem to silly to start with the asking price.....

Highest spec? Doesn't seem to have much spec and is missing the all important iDrive/Navigation?

It's a one owner car with 54k miles. It's rare to get I-drive in a 1er, and it's certainly not a deal breaker for me (I've yet to see another 130i with it).

That makes mine (for sale in classified section) look like a steal... Fair enough of you want to buy from a dealer but hey, you could save £3k (with extended warranty)?

Your car is a 2005 plate (matters not to me but in the eyes of the market), has the grey interior which IMHO cheapens the interior and has had 5 previous owners. GLWTS though as it's still pretty well priced, especially with the warranty!

I realise I'm paying a premium for an AUC, but the benefits are worth a little extra I feel. However, I'm not sure it's worth anything like £12,000 as the trade price stands at around £9,500 or so I'm led to believe. Is it worth bidding towards £11k with 2 years' warranty and 2 years' servicing or will I get coffee spat in my face?

First face-lifted models were '07s as far as I know. The suspension is meant to be a fair bit nicer, as is the interior quality.

Don't worry about the stereo - BMW do an Alpine system that can be retrofitted, and it's meant to be pretty good.

They're nice cars once you get used to the rock hard suspension.

Ideally I'd have a facelift but I'm going to view the car on it's own merit - if the ride is too unforgiving and the interior quality not good enough, I'll not consider it further. I'd be interested to know if anyone's owned a pre-facelift and a post-facelift as I value day to day experience over internet hearsay...

I've read quite a bit on babybmw.net so I know about the Apline upgrade (which would indeed interest me).

go in, work out your max price and stick to it.

with mine i wasn't that keen on silver, (it was the 1st of 4 i was seeing that day)
...but they didn’t want me to leave the showroom without a car, so i said my price and after 30mins of toing and froing they accepted that price....

they still brought out the champagne to celebrate the deal

I didn't get them to shift very much on the price of mine at all, but that was 2 years ago now and the "value" of 3 litre hatchbacks is somewhat different than it was then (that said, the 130i is still, considering its power, one of the most economical hot hatches available)

A cheeky bid is always worth it, but remember that its BMW AUC and I doubt they would like to dip much lower than their sticker price. That said, if you suggest you may go buy privately and save yourself a couple of grand, they may budge...

It makes you realise how much profit they make though. My 130i is going up for sale for £9500, similar spec and mileage to the one you are looking at.

At £12k you will do well to get £500 off the window price IMO.

If they won't budge much on sticker price, what are the chances of getting an extra year's warranty or service inclusive package thrown in?

I'm tempted to go in low/cheeky as the car's been for sale for at least 2 months, and I'm based in NI - where the market is limited compared to that for mainland approved cars which can be marketed to the whole of GB quite easily.

As said that one of sale private is older so not really a fair comparison.

Go take a look and see what you think to it. There are bound to be some rough examples by now.

I bought my 130 from a dealer mid last yr. 57plt with 10k miles on it for £16k. Nice spec but no Nav.

The car was/is mint and I had/have the AUC backup so felt paying that bit extra was worth it.

They are great cars and really undervalued I think. Not a great deal of 3.0 petrol cars have 265bhp and can do low 30's mpg.

The NI factor may influence things, but generally, dealers won't move much at all. You have more chance on getting things like tax and service packs than discount IMO.

That is a very well specced car - the nav/i-drive is one option I really didn't care about when I was looking. The only slight downside for me would be that it's pre-FL.

Reasonably priced as an AUC to - but definately go in with a low cheeky bid first, you never know.

They are very good cars and great value for money right now.

I'm not particularly bothered that it's a pre-facelift, as by all accounts the fully electric steering on the facelift cars is far inferior. I think they'll be keen to do a deal but I suppose it all depends on if I actually like the car or not! whistle

Appreciate what you're saying. I've never been fussed about number of owners, better to buy on condition and history (my CSL had 5 owners and it was like new!). I've grown to like the grey interior as it lightens the car inside a bit but each to their own.

Re your price at £11k, that's about what I would go in at (with 2 + 2). Good luck!

As an aside (and sorry for thread hijack!), anyone care to comment on my ad? The pics aren't great I know (no time...) but it's a straight car and (seems to me) keenly priced?

Let us know how you get on, be good to see what sort of haggle room there is in AUC's.

As others have said, you're better off asking for things thrown in (service, tax, tyres, replacement trim, fuel etc).

I got a few hundred off plus a few of the aformentioned - but then again mine was very keenly priced for an AUC.

It should be done already, but ensure that it has FBMWSH and that no item needs servicing is needed for at least 4000 miles (this is supposed to be tru for any AUC but some dealers "forget"). You can check this by flicking through the dash menu with the left indicator stalk on start up for brakes, oil etc etc.

£12k seems slightly on the high side for the mileage, age and lack of idrive - I'd try get them below £11.5 with a few things thrown in.
