Porsche 911 GTS Goes 4x4 And Topless

New editions spread the GTS benefits across the model range

Four-wheel-drive coupe and cabriolet versions of the Porsche 911 GTS will be available this summer.

Although we thought the rear-drive GTS (drive story here) was going to be the current 911's 'last hurrah', with hindsight we could have predicted that the extra showroom appeal of the GTS package would be spread across the 911 range.

Visually, Porsche says the new Carrera 4 GTS models 'differ in points of detail' from the rear-wheel drive car launched in December. In addition to the badging on the doors and rear lid, and a reflective stripe between the tail lights, the 4x4 gets the wider rear track of the 2wd car under its (already) wider arches.

Otherwise the existing GTS spec is carried over, so you get 19 inch RS Spyder alloy wheels in black with a central wheel bolt and gloss-finished rims. There's a Sport-Design front apron with black painted spoiler lip and special side skirts, also in black. Inside, there are sports seats for driver and passenger, and black Alcantara trim on various internal components. Porsche Communication Management offering touch-screen controls for the audio system is also included.

The 911 Carrera 4 GTS will cost from £83,145 for the Coupé, and £90,024 for the Cabriolet and will be available from July - just a few short months before the next generation 911 is expected to make its debut at the Frankfurt motor show.

God, even Porsche 911ophiles are going to be working night shifts to "anorak" all the different derivations. Still, we can now add it to the "alternatives to a Defender" list... wink

Are the differences between this and the 4S just cosmetic? I thought the 4S already had the wider body, the brake light strip..

this has the performance engine kit option (£8k ish) plus the other dynamic tweaks and wheels fro an extra 2,350 over the C4s.

suspect the GTS varients will be well sort after on the used market, so basically a no brainer if you are looking to get a new 997S before the new model appears.

wonder if the last gasp discounts are starting yet (not that I want to spend 80k on one)

I wonder if they'll do a Targa one?

Depends how many Targa bits they've got left 'round the back of the factory I suppose.

No, the difference is actually mechanical. The GTS is a more 'focussed' version of the 911. In essence it's aiming towards the GT3 in terms of driver experience.

Indeed. The Porsche forum is even full of people sniggering and rolling their eyes! I'm sure it will be a cracking car, but I fail to see the relevance. The GTS is supposed to be a more driver focussed car, so why bother with 4 wheel drive? The GTS actually made sense, but this is rather comical!
