Fitting Bushes - Upper Wishbones

Hi,

I am fitting new front upper wishbones this weekend (after fitting new brakes , I poked around and found that the rust mice had been hard at work turning the upper wishbones to swiss cheese)

Question :

I have purchased the standard upper front wishbones, bushes and thrust washer etc... and have checked Quinny's excellent link regarding replacement.
However does anyone know whether I can fit the new bushes to the wishdone without the assistance of either Hulk Hogan, Large Elephant (not the mother-in-law) or a 20 ton press ?

you should be able to push them in using a good vice... Just keep them going with a bit of lubrication and once started don't stop till they are home....
Located on the outer bush with a sockett or something...

Hi,
I am replacing all my wishbones and bushes at the moment and can say that the poly bushes go in a lot easier especially using some copper slip grease. Just make sure that the go in square.

I fitted some polybushes on my chim recently, once greased went in like a dream. However a tip from Steve Heath was when locating the wishbones into the mountings on the chassis, if they are very tight you can spread the mounts slightly by using a treaded rod or long bolt through the mounts with a couple of opposing nuts inside and you can then carefully wind them apart a little.

Worst exercise is removing the bushes. Putting new bushes is piece of cake :
- plenty of copper grease around
- a vice to push the bush in the wishbone

Then to put the wishbone on the chassis, an aligning bar helps a lot.

Hi,

Dispite buying a vice and lots of copperslip, I can't manage to get any of the bushes completed seated. I can get the bushes about 95% there with about 5mm left. Now I know this implies I am weakling, but I have managed to bend the bar on the vice using a 2ft pole to get some leverage.

I wouldn't use heat..

I recently fitted Steve Heaths bushes to all my wishbones with almost no use of a vice. just cleaned up the inside with some wet and dry and used the copperslip as suggested before.
It's worth noting though that without the copperslip and with a vice it was almost impossible to get the bush in.

Two things to check
1. You have got the correct bush??
2. You did remove the outer metal sleeve of the metalistic bush you're replacing??

You may have the bush fully in the wishbone - try putting an appropriate size socket on the other side and pushing the bush through the wishbone by 2.5mm to centre it up - although 5mm sounds a lot.

The bushes and wishbones are brand new from Racing Green, so they should fit.

I suspect that rubbing down with wet & dry first might have helped.

Anyway I am off to find a local engineering firm with big press. :-)

Try using a stud with a large washer at each end, then windi it in, thus method is effective.

Recently done mine and were no problem. Only slight problem with new arms maybe if the inside of the arms have been powder coated. If they have this might make the space for the new poly's that little bit tighter. I found a g-clamp and some sockets saw the bushes home ok.
Getting the arms back into the chassis mounting brackets with the white plastic caps in place was a bit more interesting, especially if you have painted the brackets!
