Loud buzzing and clicking noise when it's fully extended...

Mk 2 car, with power aerial.
A few days ago my aerial has started making a (very) loud buzzing noise with lots of clicks when it's fully extended. It's not a problem when it's going up, just when it gets there. It still goes up and down. I've resorted to unplugging the power on it for the short term, until I can fix it. I guess it's the long nylon toothed tracking being broken? Or if that had happened would it stop going up and down?
Also a month or so ago the radio doesn't seem to pick up any stations, although I'm not sure if that's related. I guess it's a loose connection somewhere?
