Zed's (potentially!), dead baby!

I'm contemplating my options as to whether to fix or replace.

I figure I can 'sort' it for about £1k but, while I do love the car, I'm getting fed up with firefighting the seemingly endless niggly breakages.

My planned Monaro ownership may be a little out of reach right at this moment in time so I've been looking at other options with a limit of around £5k.

The wish list goes a bit like the subject field, I'd like something that's a bit 'raw' rather than refined but comfortable enough to do the 60 mile round trip commute every day but with grunt comparable or exceeding that of the Zed.

Been considering......

BMW 850/40
BMW 635 CSI
Camaro
Firebird
XJS, (Maybe a bit too refined.)
Supra
Skyline (Maybe)
Soarer

So what else should I be considering?

TIA

Not sure if £5k would get anything worthwhile but 928?

Those have crossed my mind, but I looked at one once a few years ago and TBH, they strike me as being a bit of a liability. Possibly even more so than the Zed.

944s/968s are kinda out too as I'm not really comfortable in them.

Fair enough. The 850 would if you like comfort or the Supra for the pace would be my thoughts from your list.

850 would be a good shout - there are very few ways go get into a v12. I can't imagine many other v12s which fit the bill and wouldn't put the fear of god into you come servicing time.

I found the 840 a much nicer drive than the 850 if you go that route.

The BMW '8s' are kind'a top of my list at the moment TBH. I think I'd be more inclined to pitch for an 840 from what I've been reading on the 'internetz' with regards to 'on paper' spec's. (That and I just lurve pop up headlights! smile )

True, looks so much more expensive.

Do you care about manual vs auto? (It's a pity they don't make the Jag as a manual.)

Out of your list the Soarer is the best value and cheapest. V8's auto only, comfy and maybe not as quick as you'd think. 2.5 turbo is quicker but rare manuals exist.

Xjs is a great GT car, but very refined. I loved mine and it was sumptuous. But my current steed is a far better drive. Also V12's like a drink 11-15mpg and are auto only. Manual 6 pot is ok but not as speedy and still rare. Auto 6 pot is a performance league lower unless you plan to mod.

If you are very lucky you might find a LS1 Camaro in budget. This is what I have. Very very good. Fast, 30mpg on a run and handles well. Nice mix of comfort vs sensation. The earlier 93-97 cars have the LT1 engine. Not quite as fast but still very nice. 3rd gens are slower but maybe look more sharp.

Firebirds and Trans Am's are the same cars as Camaros. But cost more for some reason. Most yanks are autos in the UK, although most were manuals in the US. These are probably your best bang per buck option.

Mustangs might be an option. But slower and out performed by Chevy/TA's.

Supra is very capable. But I guess £5k means na MK IV or turbo MK III. So maybe a performance level down.

Jag XK very nice. Bit like XJS but faster more sporty. Tiny rear seats and slower than a LS1 Camaro.

There is a conversion for them, i remember looking into it when i saw how cheap XKR's had become.

I rather like the look of the 8's. Someone a few streets over had a juicy sounding red one (they have a silver M5 now though).

Not sure how fast they are though.

I raced a 645ci in my Camaro once. The BMW was slower, and I'd have thought an 840 isn't as peppy as a 645.

But yeah, the popup headlights are very cool biggrin

Over budget (just):
CHEVROLET CAMARO 5.7 V8 Z28
£5,995

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2645218.htm

Under budget:
1997 Z28 5.7
£3,995

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2509267.htm

Both quick cars. The LS1 powered one is limited to 160mph and should be doing 0-100mph in 11-13 sec as standard. Easy to tweak too.
