Ok. It's my brother's birthday soon and we both like Mixed Grills. So I thought I could try putting one together and cooking it for his birthday. Originally, I thought I'd do it for all four of us, but I think that would be too expensive, not to mention a pain to get it all ready at the same time. I want it to be nice quality, but not silly money either. I suppose it should contain the following:

1 8oz Steak (fillet, sirloin, rump)
1 Chicken breast
1 Gammon Steak
1 Sausage
1 Chop (lamb or pork)
Obviously, accompaniments can be sourced without problem.

Any suggestions or alternative lists most welcome.

The last 2 suggestions are twisted and wrong.

Liver is wrong but black pudding is a must.

I have had cote de boeuf, not sure where I'd get one, how to cook or cut. but thats a meal on its own surely.
Liver is a no no, we all hate it. Black Pudding is a possible.

Lamb and Pork chop, but leave out the chicken breast

Definite +1 for the black pudding

Ribeye for the steak as it will take a slightly longer cooking time if needed.
Bacon, sausage and pork chop.
Lamb chop
I'd also drop the chicken breast, go for sticky drumsticks if you must.

I'd go quality rump for the steak requirement personally on a mixed grill, a nice thick 8oz would be good and then:

Chicken breast marinated in BBQ sauce
Pork Chop from butchers with kidney still attached
Barnsley lamb chop
5oz gammon steak
Large quality beef and pork sausage
Chunky, crispy double fried chips
Beer battered onion rings
Mushrooms sauted in garlic butter

That'll do me.

Been reading about cambells butchers in edinborough. They sound great and are not charging donald russell prices. some of it seemed very reasonable.

Wouldn't be right without a fried egg or two. A few different types of sausage would be a good way to make it more interesting without too much extra expense.

Sense this does not make..

Don't bother with chicken unless you are very good at cooking it, ruins a mixed grill imo.

Try really thick cut bacon instead of gammon, goe for a couple of variety of chipolata style sausages (I always find a nice juicy sausage refreshing in between mouthfuls of meat biggrin)

Used to know a chap who'd say the measure of a good mixed grill is when you're half way through and you find a chop you didn't know you had.

Not sure about chips tbh.

I used to work down at Sellafield and there was pub in small village nearby (Gosforth) that did a mixed grill for about £9:

8oz steak
Gammon steak
Chicken breast
2 slices Black pudding
Cumberland ring
Liver
2 fried eggs
Lamb chop
Pork chop
Half-rack ribs
couple of rashers of crispy bacon
Tomato
Mushroom
Chips
Onion Rings

Quality was OK, value was tremendous! Used to leave the chips... wink
