Yes, it's a what car.

Been looking into a new car for a while. My criteria is pretty much that I want something smallish, cheap to run, cheap to insure and be economical. The only other thing is that it needs to be fun!

I original decided that I wanted an Ignis Sport.

1.5l 16v 107hp engine. Average 41mpg. 8.9s 0-60 Insurance group 9 (and quotes not bad at all), priced from £1500 upwards, and it is (by all owner accounts) fun! Looks like a little rally car on the road and has been setup to be a B road beast from the factory. Not a lot puts me off about this car. The only thing I can think really is that it is 3 doors, which brings me onto my next car idea...

Having a 9 month old daughter, I need a car with reasonable space in the back to put her seat. Most cars are fine but a 3 door car will ultimately be impracticable (although not to the point that I wouldn't have one). I scoured autotrader/ebay for ideas and came across the Daihatsu YRV.

Originally looking at the 1.3 16v with 85hp but soon stumbled across the 1.3 16v Turbo producing 130hp. Average 40.5mpg, 8.4s 0-60, insrance group 8 (good quotes again) and priced from around £2k upwards. What attracted me to these is the fact that it is small, light and a 4 door. Not to mention the 130hp turboed engine under the bonnet. Reviews suggest that it isn't the best handling car in the world but the turbo boost will more than make up for the fun that is lost in the twisties.

Now, I set my heart on either one of these and would test drive nearer the time to see what I really wanted to go for. Would I go for practicality, but turbo fun in the YRV or b-road warrior but impractical Ignis Sport?

As said, I've been thinking about it for months. Just concentrating on these two cars but just yesterday I had a thought. How about a Toyota Yaris T-Sport?

1.5 16v 103hp engine, 41.5mpg average, 9s 0-60, insurance group 7 and priced from 2k upwards. My partner had a Yaris (atlthough only a 1.0l) so I know what they are like. They are practical and not bad cars by any means. All that let hers down was the fact that it was horribly slow. The T-sport solves that. What also attracts me to these is the fact that there is a 5 door version too which solves the impracticality issue. They are fairly rare though and seem to fetch a premium, oddly. Reviews seem to say that they don't handle as well as other "sporting" hatchback models so am assuming it probably suffers from the same issue as the YRV, understeer.

So stuck really. Short of going round and driving one of each to get a better feel of them, I don't know which to go for. It's really only going to be used to get to work and back a few days a week (when I don't cycle), plus probably every now and then on the weekends to ferry myself, my partner and our daughter around, although she has her own car anyway so might not get used that often at the weekend. I wan't one of the sportier models simply because I want to be able to enjoy it when I do drive it and be able to press on when I want to. Plus, due to the nature of these cars (small engines etc.) they are still very economical in sporting form so seems silly to go for a lower powered unit just to get an extra 3-5mpg.

Budget is around 2.5-3k tops and am open to other suggestions if you think all 3 are crap.

Surely you should drive all three?

If it were me I'd be going for the either the Ignis or the Yaris. The YRV was never that big a seller here and that could potentially have a knock on maintenance wise (although thats by no means certain). Plus I like the Yaris's almost rollerskate on wheels nature, even driving my mates base spec one I can't help but smile a little.

I drove a Yaris T-Sport a few years ago and loved it. Felt like I was sitting quite high up but it depends what you are used to I guess. Haven't tried the other 2 but always fancied an Ignis because non car types have no idea what they are.

The other one is a bit too ugly, don't like the window lines and the proportions just look weird. The other side of that coin is that it's not as dull looking as the other two. For that reason I'd probably go for it wink

I will do when I'm actually going to buy one. Just want to hear others views on the cars I'm interested first.

The YRV is one of those cars that doesn't photograph very well. Someone in my old works car park had one and they actually look quite good up close. Personal opinion of course.

It's not the looks I'm bothered about though. I like the fact it has 130hp under the bonnet, returns 40mpg+ and has 4 doors.

The Yaris is great but a little hopeless for kids and all the related prams, seats etc. Our 3 door is a pain in the arse for getting the wee man in and out of.

Some left field choices there. Thing out of the 3 the Yaris would be least appeing. Ignis looks the best for sure. But how mappable is that YRV? Think you need to drive them though. Not sure I can really suggest anything else as I'd be looking at far more odd ball choices yet such as a modded Morris Minor or even a Rover p6 2000.

I had an Ignis, was a good little car. Fairly brisk, decent enough handling, good recaro seats. Only thing is the ride - it's pretty firmly set up and it crashes over speedbumps and potholes something rotten. If you've got a family you can pretty much forget about transporting a little one home whilst sleeping!

I've got an ignis sport just now. They are very capable cars, and very very fun. But here's a few bits which may put you off. They like to run on higher octane. The boot may not fit the bigger buggies of today. I often have my nephew travelling with me, but he is 5 years old. He doesn't have a problem sleeping in the car, but it might be different for a 9month old. The front seats don't like child seats.

Overall they are great cars, but may not fit all your practical needs. If the child isn't traveling in the car often it may not be a problem.

If you search ignis sport there are a few threads on jt giving you plenty of info.

Parts prices for the Daihatsu are a bit ridiculous many being dealer only, and they don't keep anything except the essentials in stock (or they don't around here). The YRV is also available with 4WD, but I think it only comes with a tiptronic box.

Ive got a bit of a love hate thing going on with my Ignis right now, mechanically nothing much will go wrong with one but I must say they are very flimsy, the Yaris is the safe option I wish I had gone with the yaris most of the time until you get to a B road, the steering is very direct, the clutch uses a cable and can be a bit creepy, there's no sound deadening and the engine is very responsive when used with V-power much less so with regular unleaded I think it has a very light fly wheel or something It stalls very quickly and easily when pulling away if your not careful you have to give it a bit of revs the throttle is also very sensitive

Any new of which of the three you've gone for? If any of them? Or news on likes/dislikes on test drive?
