I've recently had 2 systems die on me. Now I couldn't decide if it was to proc or mainboard, so replaced both and it fixed the problem on both occasions.

I inherited the unenviable task of looking after about 10 systems 6 months ago, and it's the newer ones that died. Which leads me to suspect that it might be temperature related as the newer systems have faster procs.

The newer processors seem to run at about 43-48 degrees C. How does that compare to everybody elses?

That seems entirely reasonable, if not pleasantly cool.

Yep, you are running on the cool side. My Athlons run at aound 55C going up to just over 60C when working hard on a hot summers day.

The AMD website says that it's ok as long as you are below 85C!! (Varies by a few degrees depending on the model)

Current XP1800+ runs at 57c

The 1200 that was in there previous ran happily for months at around 100c oddly enough...

My AMD 1200 runs at 45oC on a normal day with sides off the PC. 55oC with sides on, or 60-65oC on a hot day.

The room it's in also faces South and becomes unbearable!!

Nevermind, will have wireless soon and can use the laptop elsewhere!!!

I just thought it'd be a laugh. Its good as it doesn't matter what the fastest CPU on the market is at the time, you always have the fastest PC once you have bought the chip.

The funny side is while the CPU is 'chiilin out' everything else around it is bloody roasting as the case pumps out hot very hot air at the back They don't mention that when you buy one.

Its a fun piece of kit, it attracts a lot of interest to PC and the like, and when I'm bored I clock it up a little more and see what happens.

There is a downside to this hobby as in that no matter how cool the thing runs, you still get a lot of component failures. I have fried a handful of quality mobo's, two expensive graphics cards, some memory and 4 CPU's, all of which were fairly high end P4's. P4's clock better than AMD's but AMD's are much cheaper to replace when I have 'over estimated' their capabilities. To date, my last chip was the fastest - a P4 3.06Ghz HT with a 533Mhz FSB, which at minus 31 degrees was clocked at 3900Mhz for exactly 1 hour then it was all over folks

This newer 3Ghz cpu with 800Mhz FSB seems quite happy at 3.6 Ghz, so I am content with that..for the moment and to be totally honest you never notice the extra speed gained. You notice it more when the damned thing falls over or it the case decides it wants to engage 'Chernobyl Mode' and do a core-cooler shutdown

No, but somewhere there is a web page about a chap who got hold of a load of liquid nitrogen to power a quick way to chill some tinnies and cool his PC on one loop.
