I just Resigned ......SSSHHHH it's another What car thread
Discussion
Morning All, I'm Having a great morning, I've just resigned from my job
Currently I do 25-30k a year as a consultant and when not on site I have a 80mile round trip to the office. So my car choice has been decided on the millage I do
But NO MORE!!! I'm going to be office based with a 14 mile round trip to the office,
So It's all change on the car front
I want something a bit more special, I like coupes, but the one I have is to small for me needs. But Coupe / Cab / 4 Door / Estate I'm not fussy
So here goes
Needs to be big enough to carry camping gear, baby gear(6 weeks old needs everything) and parents gear for a week or 2 camping
Budget upto Approx £3k
Under 80k miles, althought ideally under 60K miles.
A quick looks makes me think of these, but all suggestions welcome.
Jaguar X-Type or S-Type
Volvo C70 Coupe or Cabrio (not sure on the boot space in the cab but I've had a coupe before and loved it)
Subaru Legacy B4RSK Seems to be a few about in this price range
BMW 3 series touring
Alfa Sportswagen
Mercedes CLK / C or E Class.

Wouldn't touch a Merc at that price of any description.
I've had a couple and the build quality is just appauling, CLK, E or Class they rust faster than a 1980's Lancia Beta. Plus I had constant electrical gremlins with abs sensors, brake assist warning lights.
It's a real shame the older Merc's in the late 80's and 90's seemed to be much better built.
For 3k, decent E46 BMW I would think

3.0 V6 X-Type or S-Type would be worth a look. Even an x300 4.0 XJ6 or x308 4.0 XJ8 sticking with the Jag theme.

I'd also look at Toyota/Lexus Soarers. Auto 4.0 V8 or 2.5T 6 cylinder, the latter can even be found in manual if lucky.
200SX s14 is fairly practical as far as coupes go.
If you want 4 door, then MS ZS 180 is very capable with added practicality.
You might also find an Accord Type R in budget too.
Accord Type R is a good shout almost brought one a few years ago, but had trouble finding a good one, bmaybe worth another look, XJ6, I'd love but even with my reduced miles I may bulk at 10-12mpg round town...
Audi?? not sure never driven one
944, No airbags so baby seat can go in the front... may be a tad old now ??
Keep em coming.

10-12mpg seems way too low unless it's a V12 Jag. Sixes and eights are high teens to low/mid 20's.Audi?? not sure never driven one

Whats wrong with old cars
Classic saloons are cool ("Series" XJ6's, Rover P6V8, Rover P5b etc.) modern cars are rubbish, long live the oldies!
Nothing wrong with old car's but I've had a XJ6 and a XJ-S many years ago and loved them but woudln't want another as I've been there done that, thats all I like old cars mostly and most of the old car's now are the one's I wanted when I was 20

. I do want reliability for trips away and on some car's that would worry me300bhp/ton said:

Off to search the classifieds for a soarer, MG.... I really like the ZT, but I hear 50/50 on the good and bad stories and it makes me nervous..The ZS would remind me to much of the Honda VTI i had...(same(ish) interior) I hated that car. Becasue they drink fuel faster than a dehydrated camel drinks water in the desert for one.
But what does that have to do with being £3k??Evo said:
Are the wankels reliable engines now?
Compared to what?Observationally I see lots and lots of RX-8's in daily use and out on the roads. So can't see that they aren't usable.
