What car (V8 content)?
Discussion
I need a V8 in my life but not sure what way to go. Currently do around 20k in my 330d at 45mpg, not sure whether to keep this for the brunt of my mileage or chop it in.
I have around £6/7k to spend, up to around £10k if I rid myself of the E46. Currently considering an E39 M5 or CV8 Monaro but other suggestions greatly welcome. Running costs aren't a major concern, 4 seats and a towbar is needed though unless I keep 2 cars.
Other than that - RWD, manual gearbox and no soft tops. Inspire me PHers

Audi S8. I think you can add a tow bar. This chap would know: http://www.a8parts.co.uk/
Not manual, and 4wd, but epic sound and a great towcar. Otherwise, an S4? (http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2726586.htm)

I'd seriously consider that option. For the price of a good secondhand Monaro you could get a big bad V8 TVR and a nice cheap, economical, long wheelbase diesel tow car.
I've done more or less that for the past four or five years on and I reckon it's worked out cheaper than owning a single all-rounder with anything like the same appeal would have been. Things like specialist insurance policies can make owning a second car seriously cost effective and it means you don't have to compromise on your 'fun' car.

MGB GT V8 you'll get a nice factory car for £6-7K
Yep, a nice factory GTV8 is a lovely car. Drove to Berlin in mine in '94 and it never missed a beat.

Of course, you could blow your budget on a 4.0/4.3 Griffith - Zero depreciation, maximum enjoyment of the driving, sight and sounds.

E39 M5 will tow: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Thats one option out the window already then.Towing bit isn't essential if I keep the E46 but the budget will only be £6/7k then
Don't think you'll find that many 4 seater rwd V8 tow cars with manual boxes otherwise.
If you ate after a performance car then I'd say keep the BMW and then look at things like Vettes and TVR's. Lots of 2+2 options even at £6-7k too.

FFS, now you have me trawling through the TVR classifieds
Before I get myself too excited I must point out that the car will be living outside, budget doesn't stretch to building a garage as well.
Mine sits outside.

Take one for a drive, you'll not be dissapointed like the time with that 996.

2 car option is starting to look the best. I'd prefer a proper sports car and keep the E46 if it can be done for under £7k, some of the TVR options are looking potentially good.
ETA
Major disadvantage of living in Norn Iron, not too many options locally although this did jump out

Not too much to overwelm a TVR virgin.

k did we both manage to post the same car simultaneously
Will it have enough poke for sideways fun though? TBH a cerbera looks the ticket, although stretching the budget slightly.

Yep. Do go in with a contingency fund, though. They're a lot more reliable than people make out, but you can still have expensive mishaps - I'm about to embark on an engine rebuild for my 5-litre Chim which is likely to cost two or three times the entire value of my daily driver! That's a case of seriously bad luck, but, still, I felt happier driving it around knowing I could cover it if something like that happened. Good job really. You can get a good V8 wedge for about £5k I believe. The V6S is well worth looking at as performance (and noise) are far closer to the V8s than you might expect. If you have a little more budget, the pick of the more affordable Chimaeras and Griffiths is the Chim 430 I'd say personally. Virtually as powerful as the 450s in the real world, nicer engine and innexplicably cheap. The image of the Griff means you're looking at £10k for a similar car, if not more.
