All,

A question for those more knowedgable (i.e. traders, I suspect) about car auctions.

I'm interested in a car which is going to auction next week. Done the research on it (its going through a BMW Group sale) and I've had a look at the car, cheked condition history etc and it all looks good.

However, the car has no MOT.

My question is, is this likely to be that it was MOT'd and failed or is it more likely that the MOT ran out and they just didnt bother getting it tested? Its only just run out, so I'm thinking it might just be an oversight/policy not to bother?

But, the cynic in me is thinking "hang on, it wouldnt have cost much to put 12 months on it if it was a pass".

If it makes a difference, the car is 5.5 yrs old, looks in pretty good nick and has full history/recent tyres etc.

If anyone has experience of this, any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks

Is he not talking about an mot ?

I guess it depends on the dealer , if it was a big main dealer he wouldn't have bothered with it . If your not easy going to auction then buy privately , sometimes cheaper or put another another 2k for peace of mind

More than happy going to an auction. The car I'm after has a very specific spec/colour and I'd buy from anywhere - privately, dealer or auction. As it happens, one has come up at auction. I've seen it, researched the car and am happy with it. However, I've just been told there's not MOT on it.

All I was wondering was whether this was because they just don't bother as it wont affect the sale price much or whether it would have been done as a matter of course, but failed on something which wasnt worth repairing.

Does it specifically state no MOT or has the MOT just not yet arrived with the auction? Often the detail on the docs only gets confirmed at the sale - the cars and docs do not arrive together.

A main agent is unlikely to bother MOT'ing a car they are sending to auction and will sell it as it came in.

The auctioneer has told me it doesn't have an MOT. They have all the other docs (V5, spare key etc) so I suspect it won't have one.

The bold bit is what I suspected but wanted to make sure I wasnt deluded, thanks.

Expect problems with the MOT and if it passes fine that’s a bonus - if it was in decent order would they not have sold the car privately? There must be something wrong with it - why would have they put new tyres on it before selling on? Why didn’t the dealer just MOT the car before sending to auction.
Is there any way you can get the details required for its MOT history online (document reference number, registration)? You could then check how many miles the car has covered since its last MOT and any advisory notices.

No, I can't unfortunately.

When looking at another one of a similar age (06, this one is a 55 plate) at a main dealer, they said it was very unusual for them to sell a car that age! I suspect its just too old for them to retail.

I will certainly expect a fail on the MOT when pricing my bid, thanks.

Edit: As for the tyres, two look pretty new, one looks borderline.

Why would a car that is x.5yrs old not have an MOT?

OK, there are theoretical circumstances, but in the normal course of events it should have half a year left.

The car should be MOTed at that age, as it isn't six years old yet. I wouldn't be expecting any major problems MOT time, but you just never know of course. Emissions would be the most likely candidate for bother on a car that old . (That might prevent it being economically repaired)

What he said (the bold bit). It's in a BMW Group auction, so it's very likely a P/Ex that they've taken. At 5.5 years old a main dealer won't want it on their forecourt, so it goes to auction. They'll have made their money on their sale, so they just want the most money they can get for the P/Ex with the minimum of effort.

It's not really worth them spending on it - auction price would probably vary more based on other factors like how well attended the sale is, whether two people want the car, the weather and general mood etc, etc ...

I have a simple rule - never buy a car without an MoT.

From the seller's point of view you will always get more than £50 extra on the price for a car sold with £50 worth of MoT test. Maybe you've been lucky and found a daft seller - but I doubt it.

Same type of sale, yes.

It ran out in April. I'm guessing it had a fresh MOT last time it was sold (approved used) which put it out of sync with its birthday.

Useful post, thanks.

Yeah, I've been told exactly that! Sounds like it'll be luck of the draw as to whether it gets bought or not.

Very true.

However, I think its run out while the car has been sat with the main agent.

Having said that, I sold my last car with 2 days MOT on it (primarily, due to lack of planning!). Its certainly a negative and if I was buying privately, the MOT would be a condition of sale. Alas, I can't ask for that from an aution house unfortunately.

It's a wholesale car at auction. They come in, go on a transporter and go to auction. If it has 1 day MOT it goes off with 1 day MOT. It might be a dog, it might be lovely. I doubt anyone from the selling dealership has driven it 1 metre.

Only thing I would say is that BMW Group sales tend to be quite expensive at both BCA and Manheim so be careful what you pay, particularly if you haven't a trade account and are paying retail buyer's premium.

Phone the auction and ask them for the V5C ref number, and then go to the VOSA MOT enquiry site. This will give you the MOT history of the car, and tell you if it has a recent fail.
