Remote Signal Improver

Since my daughter is now crawling around and into things we've had to buy a cabinet to put the cable box/dvd/media pc etc.
The doors are glazed and held shut with a combination of catches and zip ties to stop little fingers playing.
Only issue is now the Virgin remote only works directly in front of the cabinet. Is their a simple solution that anyone here has tried to improve the signal ? I was thinking along the lines of a piece of optical fibre to the outside of the cabinet ?
