I am only writing this because I see as many Porches on the road as I do Mondeos (no offence to Mondeo drivers), and I will never understand why.
Take a look at this info on the new Porsche 911 (codenamed 997) making it’s first appearance at the Paris Motor Show in late September.
This info comes from a newspaper article in ‘The Straits Times’ (Singapore), dated 15/05/04.
Porsche 911 Carrera
3.6 horizontally opposed, 325bhp
0-100kmh 5.5 secs
Price – S$470.888 = US$273.772
Porsche 911 Carrera S
3.8 horizontally opposed, 355bhp
0-100kmh 5.3 secs
Price – S$527.395 = US$306.625
These prices are exceptionally high as would be somewhat cheaper) it is obvious that you could have any TVR (real car) for much, much less, and you would end up with (as most of us have), a car that is better looking, accelerates quicker, sounds better (V8 rumble), turns more heads, comes in better colours, etc, etc, etc.
Need I say more?

but in fairness the Porker could be ragged and ragged and still statr first time and no bits would fall off.
I love TVRs and am truly addicted after only 2, but my blinkers are only small ones
Whilst at Bruntingthorpe not so long ago Carzee took me out in Deristrictors Porker Turbo and we went down the runway at 180mph. CZ was giving the car a real ragging and this continued all day long with no complaints. On the same day, I think I am right in saying that all 3 tuscans that attended had problems, 1 went home on a transporter and the cerbera that was there (Big_T) had an incident when the back window blew out at 160mph 
TVRs are very addictive and have a certain character about them that you either love or hate. I can see why some people dont get on with TVRs but those that do find it a habit thats hard to break. Including me.
They are unique, grin inducing and an aboslute performance bargain. But I can see why people buy Porkers too.

1. The price is because it is in Singapore, and they have absurd taxes levied on cars. In fact, you can't even buy a car unless you have a registration (number plate) first! That way there are a fixed number of registrations available, you can buy them at auction. If you don't have enough money to buy the reg, you can't have a car.
2. A 997 Carrera will cost about 55k here, which is Cerb 4.5 Red Rose money isn't it? Lets at least compare like for like.
3. Those figures are wrong - the 997 Carrera will crack 60mph in 5 seconds dead (or less) or i'll eat my hat. I await the Autocar roadtest.
Admittedly the Cerb 4.5 will piss all over the 997 in a straight line, but with two reasonable drivers behind the wheel the Porsche would be substantially quicker cross country.
And it would start first time every time. And nothing would fall off or break.
I love my TVR, but i can't wait for the day i can keep the Tiv and buy another 911 to sit alongside her.

Snag is the average porsche driver doesn't rag it to that extent, so are unlikely to benefit from better build quality (early 996s excepted?). Accelerating moderately away from the lights in Knightsbridge seems to be the most excitement a Boxster gets to experience. I'd take a risk and guess that most porsche owners go for it cos of the bling factor: "I... have a Porsche."
Hold up - you post some bile about Porsches being common and you expect us lot to take it on the chin?

I see plenty TVRs not being thrashed to within an inch of their lives on the odd sortie of black beetled tyranny but never do I figure "quelle wusse" when such pedestrian progress is observed...rather, I is simply beholding a fabulous car merely opting to stretch it's legs via mild jog rather than frenetic 1500m sprint.
The antipathy of some sections of the Tivosi to the panzer moulds is ridiculous: can we not all simply revel in the mutual appreciation of each others' chosen steeds, all of which have their own unique charms?
After all, we have enough tossology in the wider world than to bicker pointlessly hereabouts.

Kamm discovered that the length of the end would have to be so long as to make the vehicle unpractical. There would also be an increase in surface area which would also create its own frictiondrag. He found that if he cut the theoretically long tail in half he would have both good aerodynamics and minimal surface drag. This sharply cut off rear end is named after him.
Porkers don't have this coz the engine is hanging out there in mid-air....

I'm sorry LA but the generalisation is just too great.
Jumping from a proper fire-spitting Cerby into something else was always going to be an almost impossible task for me...
Quite simply, the beetle delivers absolutely more of a hit than the TVR ever did and at no time does it feel anything less than a deliciously, envelopingly intense experience, genuinely teetering on the brink of something I probably wouldn't want to happen!
I also get 95% of the histrionics without any of the hangovers.
I completely adore TVR, love 'em to bits and think aesthetically, they kill everything but these comparisons are just plain unfair.

I have a very nice Griff 500. Before I bought it I wanted a Porsche and now I have it I still do.
The Griff is amazing and I love it but the Porsches I like are just incredible. I just cant afford them and this is why you cant really compare the two.
I sooner have any GT3 than any TVR.
(But only if I can keep the Griff for going on holiday in!)

TVR's for me are about a soul, for me a TVR has one, and a Porsche does not. But it's different for different people... If you like Porsche, buy them, if you like Tivs, buy them.
If you want to compare, drive both and choose, but we'll all be biased, but discussing on a forum seems pointless with 2 sets of people who are from opposing views as it always turns into a debate on which ones are hairdressers!
Some of us don't care whether a Porsche is quicker, slower, better in the corners... it's all about what pushes your own buttons.
