so I'm a big fan of pulling away in second, doing a bit of acceleration in 4th and then 6th by 30mph. a friend commented on how "he never gets out of second", despite his 30 mile+ commute. So it got me thinking, what gear do you spend most of your time in?

Well, my car is an old Mondeo with a mental auto 'box so god knows what gear it decides to use and when; it seems completely arbitrary. When I used to use my GSX-R750 on the daily 17-mile commute, it rarely got taken above 3rd gear.

sorry sunshine, didn't mean to offend you. I'm just interested in how other people drive their cars.

The Z4 is so flexible that it normally goes:- 1st, 3rd, 5th.

She pulls cleanly from 30mph in 5th so I find that the most commonly used gear on an average commute.

I'd actually rate it as having more useful gearing than the TDCi which preceded it.

Second gear must be the most fun gear, and in my old 1L Corsa it's the only one that has any torque at all...

Since first gear has a larger step down in speed it has more torque. Can't imagine a 1l corsa has torque limiting in low gears....

You fail your driving test for pulling off in second.

Stop in second, take off in first.

My <2 mile town drive to work is so small as to be inconsequential compared to time spent on open roads, so 5th (I only have 5).

Though generally its left in 1st when parked so the car spends more time in that gear even if I don't.

Top gear for me, so the actual gear varies on the car I'm in.
Voted 5th assuming more commutes in the MX-5.
