if they were serious about making the most mpg then this would have been the easier way, of cause it wouldn't do much for the petrol engined versions

I think the fact diesel exhaust particulate is particularly nasty would have something to do with it.

Not really a "cleaner alternative", if it's using a fuel that causes poor air quality in built up areas.

(... And whilst you can filter and reduce this effect, you can't negate it entirely)

Big issue is the diesel particulate filter - if you only ever use your diesel around town you need the filter manually cleaned as it never gets hot enough to burn off the buildup of gunk.

Also - Diesel engines are a lot harder to turn over & start/stop - all of this wouldnt be in keeping with how a hybrid works (the ability to shut off the valves when using electric only, using the engine as a dyno to charge batteries when coasting/braking etc)

Biggest market is the states, and no mainstream acceptance of diesel cars there.

this...

Dismals do not work well being started and stopped, you would loose the benefit of shutting the engine off (fuel wise) along with the NVH issues.

Surely a diesel-electric hybrid? Electric motors supply the drive, super efficient diesel engine operates at it's most efficient RPM while vehicle is in use? Batteries store "excess" power created for short trips?
