My Altea 2.0tdi is due a timing belt change since its about to reach 4 years old.
Dealer is quoting £380 and that does not include water pump.

Anyone care to recommend a good indie in Glasgow / Lanarkshire who would do this at a better price?

^^ Nothing but good things to say about these guys.

There's a garage at the Raith Interchange too - serviced my car last year and were really good - competitive pricing too.

Second vote for Jim McAuley.
Started using him over a year ago for my VW after a recommendation from Paul, he knows his stuff and his prices are at least half that of the main dealer.
Last service, he did the belt and water pump with no worries, and he even acquired and fitted me an electric rear calliper when there were 5 pissats sitting at the dealer waiting for new stock.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys, very interesting.

A couple of years ago I put the missus' Beetle into AforAudi for the timimng belt and water pump change. Can't remember how much they charged.
A while later I put it into the Bedrock veedubs in Motherwell for a service and they picked up a couple of issues that they reckoned were to do with the timing belt having been done.

Not being in any way shape or form mechanically minded I just had to take their word for it.

Recently I used a small indie in Carfin, Weir Autos who were great with the Beetle. But last time it was in for a service and MOT, passed its MOT straight away with no advisories even though last year's MOT had advisories on the brakes and I had not done anything to them in the year in between. Mmmm.
They also did not notice in the service that one tyre had a nail in it and was down at 18 pressure.

So not sure to trust them with this job or not thus the question for other recommendations!

Am in the process of contacting the ones recommended on here for quotes.

However the best price so far is from Verve the VW dealer, using the VW scheme for 3-10 year old cars, belt is £319 or £399 to include water pump.

Hopefully will get that price down at some of the indies but I do like the idea of the 2 year warranty from a main VW dealer.......

Will keep you posted.

Keep on them about that ^^. The part is only about £50 and all the access/labour cost to get at the pump job should be taken care of in the belt labour charge.

Plus, the official VW offer price is usually £299, unless the prices have risen in the last six months.

I used these guys recently to do the timing belt, water pump and actuator on my TT and I think it was around £320. Thumbs up

Anyone any comments on this lot - their prices are coming out best, good communication but just wondering if anyone has any experience of them?

Yes they're very good. Well organised outfit and to be honest a bit more professionally run than bedrock.
So if they're cheaper use them

Personally I still prefer bedrock as they're a bit more enthusiastic about cars and do a lot of engine / big turbo conversions and are quite nuts, but in a good way.
However they are very very busy and may have to wait for over a week and a half to get your car in.

I know that a lot of other mechanics that can't undertake work on certain cars recommend or transfer it on to bedrock.

Hiya, quoting £300 for SEAT belts, pulleys etc and water pump.

Old Uncle Arnold quoted me a cheaper price when I phoned for the timing belt replacement. However when I asked some more questions, that was literally for the belt - they weren't doing the "belt kit" which comes with the pulleys etc.

Mmmm
