Peeps,

We're now fully noggin'd up and broken chipboard replaced (thanks for previous advice). Carpets are being fitted on Monday.

However, there are areas where the T&G is broken off on old boards (which are too awkward or not worth replacing), leaving long gaps / troughs up to ~1.5" wide which might not be good if someone were to stand above them in high heels or a small foot on some furniture happened to end up on top.

Is there a suitable filler I can use to sort the larger ones? I guess it doesn't really need to bond to the chipboard as it'll have underlay and carpet on top, but we don't want it making noises if it does start to move around or crack with people walking on top of it.

Is it a complete gap meaning the tongue and grove has gone completely ? or just the top section of the board and the tongue is still in place ?

If the latter 2 pack filler should do the job and dries very quickly

Thanks; in most areas, it's just the top of the T&G that's broken away, leaving a wide but fairly shallow trench.

I'd need a few tubs of that stuff though - I'll have a look in Screwfix to see if there's a big tub of something equivalent.

Don't forget to check ebay you might save a fortune. Or not, but have a gander.

You could just use sawdust/shavings (cheap enough from pet stores etc) and mix with varnish.

Thanks

What I've done is fill the majority of the gaps with random strips of wood, then the remaining space with a tube of flexible filler, both of which we already had.

Looks OK, and only a bodge if it doesn't work....
