Can anyone recommend the nicest PUB restaurant or if not a pub, a great place quite central to eat a nice meal. I've been a few times but didn't stumble upon anything special when visiting Brighton for the day. Suggestions gratefully received.

Due South on the seafront is very nice, also the gingerman in Hove. Both are restaurants. The Gingerman has a couple of other pub/restaurant. Ginerpig and gingerfox, though I only ever go to the restaurant.
There are plenty more, what do want to eat?

ETA For a decent pub roast try The Lion and Lobster, or straight down from the station; the Earth and Stars is a nice pub with good food.

ETA again, The Hop Poles is good if you can get a seat, middle street in the south lanes. The Office in the North Lanes does decent Thai, good prices too.

I'd echo dmiti's suggestions about the 'Ginger' chain of places. The Gingerman is the original in Norfolk Square and is more of a restaurant, the Ginger Pig is their pub in Hove and is very nice.

Just outside the train station gates, turn up the first hill on your right & there is the Yeoman which is a pub doing fantastic food. From there you're a short stroll from the Evening Star as mentioned, a 'proper' pub with a huge selection of real ales, Belgian beers & ciders.

I ate at the Hop Poles yesterday, and was sorely disappointed, which is a shame as it used to be consistently good. It's sister pub The Eagle in the North Laine area is worth a look. They bake their own bread & do decent food.

All depends on what you like, but I think Brighton has a great selection of restaurants. You just have to avoid the vast number of identikit Italian type places & tourist traps.

Terre a Terre consistently wins awards as the best vegetarian restaurant - and do some outstanding & inventive food. If you like seafood, Riddle & Finns in the South Lanes is really excellent, or slightly cheaper, Fishy Fishy is really nice as well.
Due South is very good (but pricey). Chilli Pickle (now on Jubilee St near the library) does Indian 'street' food & authentic dishes. For cheap eats, Pho does lovely Vietnamese noodle soups, or Pompoko near the Dome serves excellent Japanese food extremely reasonably in a small cafe type setting (or takeaway & eat in the park/beach).
For fantastic tapas - Casa don Carlos.

Lots of choice! biggrin

That's a shame, not eaten there in a while. Forgot about the yeoman, excellent food.
It's Sunday, maybe I need to go have lunch in Brighton. In fact have just arranged it. I'm sure I only got back from Brighton at about 5 this morning.

Need more sleep.

hehe Well it seems you posted around 5.30am. Good work! (And your fault for moving to W******!!)

Hear really good things about the roasts in the Earth & Stars, but I've never been able to get a table to try it out, which I guess says something.

... I to was in the Hop Poles yesterday - way too many Pimms and the food was not too shabby, but there is better to be had

The Sussex Yeoman up from the station gets my vote to, as well as Casa Don Carlos, though on most days and evenings during summer it's very busy - they do great casseroled bunny if that's your thing.

Echo the comments about the Italian restaurants - it is fair to say that most of them are very poor indeed.

Weird, we must have just missed each other then! I had lumpy mash sat next to a table to badly behaved children frown Not sure which was worse.

Thank you for censoring that word smile
Earth and Stars is very good food, organic stuff. They have good beers too, but it is small and getting a table is tricky.
May give it a go today.

I know it's casual and more of a day joint but you have to love Bill's?
