...and it sounds pretty angry !

I finally got my engine started this weekend ! After the body off, chassis refurb and respray this was a big moment for me. It obviously needs some tweaking and I need to figure out why it's not idling but a big step forward.

Thought you might want to hear it. Sorry about the camerawork, I was using a mini camera thing stuck on my lapel. I also forgot about the battery isolator hence the faffing about at the start.

If you want any more details, I've got a build thread in Readers Cars.

And yes, gardening has taken a back seat for the time being hehe

Kenny, sorry mate, I have read your thread in the readers cars forum and think it is brilliant (would've been better on this forum IMHO) a lot of time effort and cash has obviously gone into the project and it does inspire me for when I do mine at some point in the future, again well done mate.

Cheers.....Tony..

I did consider putting it here but when I looked through the historic threads in this forum, rebuilds etc were updated across several threads. I wanted a single record of the build which seemed to be how they did it in Readers cars. I also thought it would help promote the S to a wider audience. Most people know TVR but suprisingly few know about the S !

I know the feeling to reach this stage.
Mine fired up for the first time in 18 months last week.
Rough but should soon be sorted and back on the road. driving

It's a great feeling huh ?.

The biggies for me was first when I realised I was putting stuff together rather than taking it apart. Then, start-up. I think next will be MOT.

Cant wait to see the write up on here after your first road test! That car is gonna be awesome spin Had mine 6 months now and although plenty enough power for me at the mo I can see me going down the same route with the engine one day.You going to S Club? Hopefully see you there!

Only just seen that build thread - excellent job!

Was the MegaSquirt mapped for you? There's software freely available which will let you fine-tune the map based on data logs from driving the car around, but if it's already mapped that will save you a lot of time. Make sure you have a backup of the map!

Look forward to hearing how the rest of the running gear gets on with the extra power. It needed a fair bit of work on mine, but a lot of that depends how you use the car so I reckon the best strategy is to try it and see what breaks.

I don't know if I have the identical Nitrons to yours (mine are a bit older) but mine are advertised as invertible. But Guy advised that if they were going to be used inverted they needed to be bled especially carefully during assembly, and also that they would be more vulnerable to gas accumulation with age. I'd suggest the safer option is to mount them the conventional way up. They're already dramatically more forgiving that the standard budget dampers and I don't think there's any point chasing a few ounces of unsprung weight. If you were after that, the wheels would be the first thing to go.

V8D mapped it on their bench dyno so I'd have a starting point. The plan was to run it in, make sure I've got the induction sorted then remap it. I'd love to have a go myself but I've got a bit of research to do first. I've never tackled anything like this but I like to have a go.

The plan was to first take it to a few track days this year and see how it goes and then I was hoping to have a go at sprinting. As you say, I'll see how the rest of the car holds out and upgrade as I need.

Good advice on the dampers. I'll leave them as they are just now - I think some driver training will have more of an impact !

I see you've got coil packs so you should have full control over the ignition mapping. Is it timed off a crank trigger?

It looks like you have a precat exhaust so no lambda sensors as standard. To tune it yourself you really need to have a lambda sensor, ideally a wideband sensor. Perhaps you've already thought about getting one, but a wideband sensor and controller will set you back a couple of hundred quid. Ideally you'd weld a boss into the manifold and mount it close to the engine, but Innovate do supply a tailpipe clamp. If you're tempted to have a trip up to Bucks to have a play with one after you've got it back on the road, let me know. Once you have sorted out a lambda sensor, tuning is as simple as driving around to collect some data logs, then running some tuning software to tweak the map based on the logs. Upload the improved map to the ECU, and you're done. The idea is that using this approach, DIYers can map their car themselves by repeating the process - the more often you do it, the better the map will be. In your case I'd expect the map is already pretty darned close so it's not likely to need any tweaking, but if you're a tinkerer you'll probably want to at least find out how good it it.

It's timed off a trigger wheel/sensor on the front of the crank. Yes - the plan was to install a wideband sensor on the Y piece so I can do it myself. Thanks for the offer - may take you up on that. I'm hoping the current map will get me through the MOT and run-in period.

That's the plan, but running a bit tight on time to get it finished. I may have to leave the interior until later.
