VW transporter gearbox

Hi

I have a VW transporter 2.5 TDI van with a very broken gearbox. After trying in vain to get a second hand replacement part, I'm now facing a £4,000 repair bill.

However someone has told me that the gearbox is actually the same as a Ford Galaxy, Seat Alhambra and VW Sharan. If this is the case, I have found a gearbox from a Seat Alhambra 1.9 at a local breaker's but before taking the plunge, does anyone know whether this will do the trick?

Can you get the part number from the gearbox ?

With this anyone with access to ETKA should be able to see which vehicles from the VAG range the part has been fitted too.
