Is BHP/tonne everything?

All other factors being the same (type of car, driven wheels etc) would a 2 tonne car with say 400bhp accelerate at the same rate as a 1 tonne car with 200bhp?

Is this an extremely stupid question?

Initially maybe, but once wind resistance becomes a factor the higher power car will be faster. The lighter car will handle better obviously

Up until a point. Then it would be left for dead. For example a Veyron vs an Ariel Atom on a 2 mile runway.
