799bhp 'Mega McLaren' Due In 2014?
New McLaren aims to reset the supercar benchmark
McLaren sources have let slip details of a new performance flagship that will boast a 799bhp V8 engine slotted into a chassis built around the 12C's carbon monocell.
The new car is known as the 'Mega Mac' internally, according to Autocar which reported the story over the weekend, and says the company's intention is to 'eclipse every supercar to date' when it launches in 2014.
The 799bhp engine (why 799? You tell us...) is apparently a 5.0 litre development of the current 3.8-litre twin turbo unit by Ricardo, making 590lb ft between 3,500rpm and 7,500rpm, and revving to a maximum of 7,500rpm. As a result, the Mega Mac is projected to be able to beat the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport's 0-200mph sprint of 22secs.
As well as sharing the 12C's monocell, it will also carry-over much of that car's aluminium hydraulic suspension, and will naturally get the full complement of adaptive and active chassis systems.
On top of the 12C's rear air brake, the new car will also feature active front and rear spoilers according to the report.
A few details about the styling have also been leaked - expect something 'bigger, angrier and more functional looking' says Autocar. Expect also to fork out something in the region of £350k-£400k if you want to get your hands on one, they say.

Great, just what the world needs, another super fast car!
Different concept. This is superfast in getting to top speed as opposed to superfast top speed. Simple fact is you cant really use the top speed in most supercars but you can from time to time use the acceleration.I'm sure this car will be another technological marvel for Maclaren and the price tag looks positively cheap (never thought I'd say that about £400k) but I just hope they remember to inject a bit more passion into this one. The Maclaren F1 which was also technoligical wonder of it's time had passion and drama in spades, the new 12C doesn't I'm afraid. Let's hope they remember to sprinkle the fairy dust on this one to give it that certain something.
The engine already isn't a great start to be honest. I'm sure the numbers will be very impressive but a 5 lite turbo unit which only revs to 7500rpm isn't really getting me hot under the collar.

Agreed. Come on McLaren, we want 10k rpm!Guvernator said:

really? a 5 litre turbo charged V8 with about 800bhp doesn't excite you? ok....The engine already isn't a great start to be honest. I'm sure the numbers will be very impressive but a 5 lite turbo unit which only revs to 7500rpm isn't really getting me hot under the collar.
and 7500rpm is hardly a low max rpm. most cars on the road can't manage that, let alone ones with turbo chargers! does that mean the new 5.5 V8 from AMG is boring too? even the 6.2 which was NA "only" revved to 7500rpm. yeah i know what you mean, those engines are boring too...!
oh, and it's McLaren, not maclaren.

Why not just make it 800bhp - 799bhp is such an odd figure. Is there an 800bhp+ tax waiting in the wings or something?
Why make it 800 just because it's a round number? It is after all just a number used to represent the power of the engine. It's probably 799 because of something technical and McLaren aren't the kind to use the power output as a marketing tool or anything like that.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
