My mechanic has now changed manifold gaskets, coil pack, leads, sparks and she is still running rough.. We need i believe to reset the ecu. How can i get the software and where do i buy the lead.. and i understand i need an old laptop how old?

We had this once after our car went in for one of its many windscreens. The battery went flat or was disconnected for a long-ish period (a few days) - I cant remember which. When we picked the car up, it ran absolutely dog rough... we tested a few things and then was recommended something that felt sooo wrong. An italian tune up. We headed to our local test track and did the most worrying 0-110mph (first through to third) full acceleration run - the car was awful, then we repeated it again - the car was better - and again, and again, each time the car getting better. It got to a point where it was running fine again, but I seem to recall we kept doing this for quite a long time.. hehe

I couldn't believe it worked either, and yes, the first run was hell, but the results were astonishing. 40k miles later, it was still running fantastic at near enough 95k. smile

You need a laptop with a serial port. Or alternatively a USB to Serial converter like this

I admit I haven't actually used it yet, or made up the custom lead as described here, but I will report back soon

A bit late to the party unfortunately, but you just need a serial lead. The diagram is for the lead used when mapping with the MBE Easimap software.

If you reset everything, no... it'll just be at a potentially better starting point, the adaptives take a while to err, adapt. smile Which is I believe where the 0-110mph thing comes in - 110ish being the top of third, full throttle through 1st/2nd/3rd up to 7krpm or close to it preferable.

If you're at full throttle the ECU will be running open loop and therefore not changing the adaptives. The adaptives are applied below a certain throttle percentage and rpm, therefore that's where you need to drive the car, i.e normally. I forget what revs the ECU goes open loop.

I stand corrected. Even so, the method I described worked wonders for ours, it was utterly dog rough, I was convinced something major was wrong - as stated, this is 40k miles/ 5 years ago now or something similarly distant, the car was perfect afterwards.

Yep - it particularly stuffs things up at low throttle openings when they're out of step with each other.
