Just on the radio now. No location or time...

These things never really go away, do they? Concerning.

Just to quote what I've posted on the Queen Liz visit to Ireland thread...

Reuters are claiming that her maj's visit to Ireland is linked to the current security alert in London:

A little more background on the alert if you weren't aware:

Canary Wharf Security said:
The Metropolitan Police have informed us that a bomb warning has been received in which it is stated that an IED would detonate in London in the next 24hrs. An authenticated code word was supplied with the warning. No precise time or specific location was given.
At this stage it is not known whether this is a credible threat. However, as a precautionary measure, we have increased our vigilance across the estate and are considering further security enhancements.
We are in communication with the Metropolitan Police and SO15 Counter Terrorism Command and will advise you immediately when new information is available.

To add, from various things I've read on the social networking feeds, there have been a few suspicious package alerts this morning, including the controlled explosion as mentioned on the Reuters story.

Hopefully all just a load of jumped-up nonsense though...

Oh joy!

Is it illegal to be part of a terrorist organisation?

Would this have anything to to do with the UK government getting the feds in the US to subpoena a Boston college for their records of interviews with IRA members? A warning to back off?

I'm sure the likes of Martin McGuinness and Gerry Adams have nothing to fear should the information come out.

Certain proscribed organisations such as the PIRA/RIRA yes.

Unfortunately it is not just jumped up nonsense. Someone I know works for the anti terrorist squad and just told me to be careful.

Brilliant.

That'd explain the two boats (well, rigid inflatables) full of the MET's finest, buzzing up and down the dockside around the Wharf about an hour ago then; although it looked more like a training exercise in how not to go round in circles and end up a bit wet to me!

Have been reading people saying "be careful" on twitter too - I'm not attempting to be condescending by saying this, but how does one "be careful" of a potential terrorist threat?

The only thing I can think of is donning some running shoes so should you happen across a suspicious-looking object, you can sprint as fast as possible in the opposite direction...!

Other than that, what else can you do? (serious question)

One option would be to walk rather than take underground

I guess they imply it is back to the 70's & 80's level of vigilance. Everybody naturally kept an eye out for people leaving items/packages/even vehicles unattended. If somebody at an airport or railway station left something unattended and wandered off, you noticed it. It was a drummed into us as the green cross code.

It was a natural instinct then, and something the great British public was actually quite good at. Now we have let this instinct slip with the reduction in these kind of attacks over the last decade or two.

It did come back somewhat immediately following the 7/7 attacks you may recall. When anybody with a rucksack got onto an underground train, causing nervous glances up and down the carriage between the other passengers.

By this I mean take a route that doesn't have a lot of people.

Kudos

Whatever their motives, Irish terrorists will not want to harm any civilians. After 9/11, they lost all support from US, so anything which looks like going back that way will put their lights out.

Sabre rattling at best is their motive.

Strange for the IRA to give advance warning for a bomb, sorry IED. Maybe MI5 need more funding, hence the vague warning.

Not really strange at all - they have pretty much always given bomb warnings, except for rare occasions.

It is unusual to give a coded general warning. Historically they gave specific warnings for 'anti-property' devices placed against commercial or infrastructure targets or where the public were present. They never gave warnings for attacks on the security forces or the government.

It could be genuine or it could just be a cheap way of gaining publicity with minimal risk.
