I've got one but can't recall the brand.

It can be plugged into the mains or into a car 12v output.

Best thing to do is plug it in overnight and put a couple of ice pack things in in the morning. Then plug into car. Everything will stay cold indefinitely.

If you just plug in onto the car warm it will take an eternity to actually cool things down.

In summary they are great at keeping cold things cold or cool things cool but not so good at extracting heat quickly.

My dad has got a Halfords one that he is happy with. Although his is out of production now, I can't see the newer one being much different. You have to plug it in overnight so it can cool itself then plug it in to cig lighter. The food/drink you put in to the box should be chilled in the fridge first or it won't cool them very well.

Coolboxes only come in two sizes: Ridiculously small and walk in refrigerator.

Coolboxes are a pain in the arse. If it's only for up to 24hrs at a time, squashy coolbags with ice packs are better for squeezing into the car, and for carrying about too. Be fine for your needs. Hide the stinking camembert is a small coolbag of it's own though wink

I've got an EZETil refrigerated coolbox that I've had for over ten years. They were a 'cheap and unknown' brand back then and I think I got change out of £30 for it but you'll pay a bit more for them now. Night and day between them and unrefrigerated boxes/bags, especially at the height of a European summer.

I used to have coolerboxes but went for a Waeco CDF-18 fridge....only runs when it needs too...I usually put it on mains over night to chill right down then plug it in the car on the journey.....this consumes a max of 12 amps a day....where a coolerbox consumes 96 amps a day.... only problem is cost £300.... but once you have one you won't go back...

Had a Waeco fridge/chiller/coolbox thing in the basic campervan we rented in Australia. Worked great and had neat features like monitoring the voltage and shutting off if it got too low, but they seem very pricey over here.

A Halfords one like this would do as long as "cooler than outside" is needed rather than specific temperatures:

An adaptor like this would let you plug it into the mains:

All of these will generate a bit of heat, although probably not such an issue in an air-conditioned car.

A couple of years back I was in a similar situation. I just bought one of those small mini-fridge type things available from Argos. Cheap as chips and it runs on either 12v or AC.

I had it running for at least 3 days non-stop, keeping the milk, etc. chilled. Worked a treat, and we still use it now if going down to the beach for the day or on a camping trip.

I bought this one which can be used in and out of the car. Very useful for a 3 day trip across Europe as we could take it to hotel rooms when not in the car. It's also cheaper than the Halfords one.
