E36 325 td, where's the thermostat!

My temp gauge is doing strange things like hovering above blue on relaxed driving then rising to dead straight in traffic or when giving it some....can only assume its the thermostat, cant see it, and is it a bit of a mare to do on these things,

If you stand facing the engine and follow the hose that exits the bottom left of the rad and goes to the head, the stat is behind the metal(IIRC) housing on the head that this hose goes to.
