And why would you buy one over a 530d?, or e320cdi, or a6 tdi?
No - I honEstly don't think they are hideous. They are no Pininfarina beauty, but I like the quirky looks, but then I like the X6 too.
The car is not for everyone, but it's a clever piece of kit. It's based on the latest 7-series platform and with sliding and reclining rear seats means it has X5/5-series touring load space but can also have 7-series 'L' rear legroom. It has an elevated driving position, but has car-like dynamics rather than SUV. It's fantastically well-specc'd. Build quality is stellar (7-series interior) but 5-series pricing.
As for the others.
Normal 530d - less spec, less practical, less value, no great improvement in looks
E320CDI - don't exist anymore. The E350 is an option but looks like a taxi, stuck on boot, expensive, handling worse than even the GT let alone to 5-series.
A6 Tdi - FWD or heavy 4WD, current one as interesting to drive as a sofa and being replaced any day. New one just as ugly as the new A8.

I think you might be correct
Actually saw one this morning in white, can't deny it's a quality built car.
