Unreasonable request?
Discussion
Hmmm ... If you were looking to buy a part from a TVR dismantlers - in my case a swirl pot - and you received an email saying that they had one then would you consider it reasonable to query whether they would at least warrant that the item was crack, split and / or leak free on delivery?
I simply asked the dismantler in question "Is there any 'DOA' type warranty against cracks or leaks given that the swirl pot is sight unseen..." to which the reply was "Look mate if you dont want to trust us , buy some were else".
Was I *REALLY* asking something so out of order?

A rude, arrogant and ignorant breaker.......... Who ever would have thought such a thing

They must all go to the same school of how to win friends and influence people..... I'm yet to meet one that was civil, polite, and glad of your business

the s/hand spares I did need came from private owners or breakers of their own damaged cars
Bassfiend I think you asked a reasonable question that deserved a sensible answer

No, not an unreasonable request by phone or early on in the communications.
Something that "office types" need to remember (not aimed at OP BTW) is that the motor game has only just heard of computing, breakers have only just heard of electricity.
So when someone decides to fire off an e-mail from the comfort of the swivel chair in between cups of coffee when bored the people at the other end are not always as well placed to respond. The endless follow up e-mails with fine tuned questions they forgot the previous times become hard to respond to.
How many people e-mail their garages all sorts of questions - when do you expect them to answer, at night when you have left your swivel chair for a similar one in front of the TV at home? Or should they stop working on your car to answer their e-mails? Main dealers have less of an excuse, at best it will only interfere with people filing their nails.
Not excusing anyone who is being rude/short but I can see how it happens, even if it isn't always justified. Sadly very few people in this game went to the school of charm

Whilst sympathetic, the response you received was a bit OT, but in reality if you want a warranty BUY NEW. They dismantle cars and I hope give components a visual check at least. All they know is the vehicle mileage, anything bent will go in a skip. Vehicle age is only an indicator as parts may have been renewed. They certainly wont pressuire test parts where required. If you buy from a breaker the parts will have limited life.
Had two recent forays into breakers yards for bits.
One a Saab specialist outside of Sheffield, set of scabby wheels to stick winter tyres on - bloke was as nice as could be and gave me a range of options. What arrived was exactly as described.
The second was to buy a replacement wheel for a buckled one. Arrived about as round as an egg. Not a hope of it being fit for use. Call into Douglas Valley (Yes, I know they get some stick around these parts) and they arranged to have it picked up and replaced. The replace never happened as they couldn't source the correct replacement, but they rang me to offer a refund!
I suppose the amount of claim backs from credit cards might have something to do with this?
Not all doom and gloom.
My favourite though was about 4 years ago needing a new bit for an old Mazda. Rang the scrapper local to my parents and asked if they had a nearside mirror.
Very posh voice on phone 'One moment sure I'll just check our stock on the computer'
Phone gets put on a table, the sound of a crickle window being banged open.
'Oi, Phil you fat f
ker. Have we got a Premacy with a decent nearside mirror on it?'
Phone picked up.
'Hello?, Sir it appears we do have that item, would you like us to arrange removal?'
I simply couldn't answer.

Did you get my email about the weekend by the way mate?
Absolutely - thought I'd mailed you back but obviously not - Guildford is fine ... I'll give you the address by email and you'll find me arse in the air trying to fix the Tiv. The bearing that supports the idler pulley that goes on in place of the PAS pump on non-PAS cars destroyed itself at the weekend, pulled the bearing out of the housing and in doing so put the rotating pulley through the side of the swirl pot.

Didn't want a "warranty" in as much as "If it breaks in the next twelve months...", just an assurance that it isn't shot to crap before I get it (or if it's badly packed and gets damaged in the post) - i.e. DOA...Phil

I'll keep an eye out for the mail. If you want a hand with the spanners I may be able to dive in.I'll give you the address by email and you'll find me arse in the air trying to fix the Tiv.
