The air filter seems to have lost this particular battle, it's nearly perforated. Is that normal?

Explain a bit more. The air filter is a flat peice of sponge right at the front of the car, how has the crankcase breather perforated it?

The driver's side is badly contaminated and partial disintegrated, I'm guessing with oil that has somehow made it's way back to the air filter. I'll post a photo later.

That's impressive... Don't see how oil should have made it all the way from the crankcase breather back to the oil filter, even if you had excessive crankcase pressure. Any signs of oil in the airbox or big pipe twixt air filter and airbox?

I know its not helping to find the cause but i have just ordered a new one for mine from the Pipercross shop on Ebay £17.45 + £5.95 p&p.

My air scoop, below the filter was covered in sticky gunge and muck which took some cleaning but no sign of excessive oil in the pipes btwn filter and intakes rolleyes

The gauze in the oil trap at the bottom of the NS air box should catch most of the actual oil and let it go back down to the sump, the fumes get burnt off. Its either soaked through or comletely missing imho.
I've seen NS intake runners with Oil in before heading down towards the filter panel, not sure its that rare, maybe a lack of care to detail when servicing perhaps.

Odd, my oil trap is in the Offside airbox. I remove the catch pot and gauze and degrease both quite often.
