It might seem a silly question to some but I'm in a position where I have an M5 with rust on it and I think it will be worth more in parts than as a repaired car. Breaking it seems the best idea but I'm wondering how to go about it.

I can take the modules off and seats out and things but when it comes to removing the gearbox and engine I'm a bit stumped. I wonder if its better to leave the car as a rolling chassis for whoever wants the engine and box but ultimately its probably more profitable to break the thing entirely and be left with a bare shell on the driveway. In that case, what do people do with the shell? Do scrapy's come and pick them up?

What year is it and what is the extent of the rust - any pics?

You'll probably find people who are happy to come and take bits apart themselves- especially if they want the whole engine or gearbox.

Just be wary of people who will happily mess up one part to get another- like chopping the loom to get a sensor rather than unplugging it, and damaging the dash to get vents/dials out etc.

Breaking a car takes time, space and expertise. You then have the hassle of selling the bits (waiting for people to collect or arranging deliveries)

If you put a value on your hours / space, you may be better off selling as is.

I've stripped one before for someone who wanted the engine and gearbox for a conversion so never dealt with that side of it. But everything else I took off. The engine is so massive that it doesn't come out easily, probably have to chop the front of the car off.

It has tiny spots of rust on the sill and boot which could be rubbed down and addressed but now one of the jack points has actually collapsed. Been quoted £400 to fix it but I end up feeling its probably better to scrap it.

I wish there was some solution to this. Even considered making a track car out of it but then I don't think I'd have use for one.

My experience is that you easily sell the parts everyone wants and your usually left with a barrow full of bits that are harder to shift.

You wont believe how much comes off a car , plus you will need a fair sized garage.

Is there anything else wrong with the car? I wouldn't dismiss it because of a jacking point needing welding, but that might just be me.

I presume you don't know anyone who can weld at mates rates?

How much does it "owe" you?
Nowt, you contact your local "We buy scrap cars".
A bit more, you ebay it as "Spares or repair, not legal, buyer collects".
Maximum value out of it, you strip, ebay the parts, then shell, local scrappy, who might collect or you take a cutting wheel to it and make it into enough bits that you can take there.
Btw, for stripping, you don't take the engine and transmission out from above, you reverse the manufacturing assembly process, disconnect all stuff connecting to body and lift body from over engine and transmission, get a few mates to help.

e34 or e39?

Even e34 M5s are still worth a reasonable amount of money and for a few hundred quid in rust repairs even a ratty but solid e34 is surely worth 2k?

I say make the repairs and sell as a going concern but I am a soppy git wink

Well you can hire an engine crane for the weekend. separate engine from box if you prefer and Just keep disconnecting stuff 'till it's out. You can (don't know about this car) jack the body up and drop engines out.

Personally I wouldn't break a decent car for the sake of £400 worth of welding unless it was worth less than £400 - by decent car I mean one which doesn't have any dangerous faults and has a healthy engine / box and otherwise reasonably solid bodywork. Might be worth getting a mate with a welder to show you what to do and have a go yourself - that way if you mess up and do not have £400 to pay for the welding you haven't lost anything and can set about your original plan.

If it's the E39 you mention in your profile, I think you're completely mental to break it, rust or no rust it's bound to be worth more as a whole than you'd ever get selling it in bits.
