Had a pain in my knee for and felt like it was giving way when I walk, went to Doc and he put me through Physio for 3 months saying it was muscle wastage (desk job 25 years) anyway that did not work so went back and he gave me a steroid injection.

I am hoping the pain will go away but how long should the steroid last and if does'nt work then what do I do next? A chap at work suggested acupuncture is that suitable.

I have an exercise bike at home should I stop using it now or not?

I don't know about steroids, etc. but when my knee started giving me trouble, I started taking cod liver oil capsules. They work a treat and may go some way in helping your knee.

Get your doctor to send you to a specialist and have an MRI done.
It sounds like he isn't sure what the problem is, having changed the treatment.

I'd say using the bike is going to be OK - no impact - and will help your general fitness if nothing else.

I find GP's and knees useless and physio's not much better (unless they are brilliant....in which case they are getting paid big money to work on sports stars, not your fat leg!)

I kept telling my GP I couldnt carry my kids without falling, in the end he sent me to a BUPA knee man and I was booked for surgery within 30 mins (which included an xray)....all on the NHS!

IIRC the steroid injections last roughly 6 months but that does vary from person to person.

I have had a scan they said it was ok, therefore what did the knee surgery entail

Not necessarily saying this may be the problem, but sounds similar to a cruciate ligament strain, if so, a temporary solution is an elasticated bandage to give it a load of support. Helped me so much could start playing rugby again biggrin

What sort of scan? X-ray? MRI? Other?

I've had arthroscopy both exploratory and to remove cartilage as well as surgery to replace ligament.

The exploratory arthroscopy was because other efforts did not conclusively show the nature of the problem - possible prognosis before the arthroscopy was up to 6 months without bearing weight on the knee. Post-op I'd had some cartilage removed and was recommended gym and physio.

It was an MRI scan, I think it may be this as I used to play a lot of squash and football. Do they also refer to this as a washout?

If the MRI showed everything to be normal and you haven't hurt it in an accident then my opinion would be to take the doctors advice.

Doing a desk job for 25 years isn't necessarily a problem as long as you've been doing some exercise in your spare time. I'm assuming you used to play a lot of sport as you say, but don't any more? If not then you probably do have a degree of muscle wastage and sorting that out will may well solve your pain. It certainly sorted my knee out, although I need to keep on top of the exercise and keep the muscles strong otherwise I feel the pain starting to creep back after a few weeks.

The other benefit is it will help you get fit, which can't be bad.

The only thing I would question is whether 3 months is long enough to get a decent result.
